Target: Stephen A. Zappala Jr., Allegheny County District Attorney
Goal: Give the maximum sentence to the armed gunman who allegedly murdered a woman for rejecting his sexual advances.
On an early Friday morning, Janese Talton-Jackson was allegedly murdered outside a bar in Pittsburgh for rejecting a man’s sexual advances. Charles Anthony McKinney reportedly approached Talton-Jackson because he was interested in her. She did not feel the same way, so she continued outside. McKinney reportedly approached her again and was once again rejected, at which time he allegedly shot her in the chest. When paramedics arrived, Talton-Jackson was declared dead at the scene.
The women of this community should not fear for their lives in times when they don’t give consent. According to the United Nations, “4.5 million people are victims of forced sexual exploitation. Ninety-eight percent are women and girls.” In 2013, over 1,600 women were killed by men, and the most commonly used weapon was a gun, according to the Violence Policy Center (VPC). The VPC director, Kristin Rand said, “State and federal policymakers should take immediate action to help protect women from abusers and prevent future tragedies.”
Women of this country should not be expected to forgo their consent in order to ensure the safety of their lives. Demand that the the attorney general of Allegheny County prosecute and give the maximum sentence to the armed gunman allegedly responsible for killing Talton-Jackson to show that he will not tolerate this violence against women.
Dear Attorney Zappala,
Early Friday morning, Janese Talton-Jackson was murdered by a shot to the chest for allegedly rejecting the advances of Charles Anthony McKinney. She leaves behind three young children who she was coming home to before reportedly being approached by McKinney twice in the same evening. McKinney was allegedly chased down by police and shot before his arrest for the alleged murder of Talton-Jackson.
The rate of women murdered by men in this country is inadmissible, and caused mostly by intimate partners. This is unacceptable and needs to end. We, the undersigned, urge you to prosecute and give the maximum sentence to the gunman allegedly responsible for killing Talton-Jackson and demonstrate that Allegheny County will not stand for this type of violence.
