Close Zoo Allowing Animals to Starve to Death

Target: Mohammed Ouida, Owner, South Jungle Zoo

Goal: Close zoo and immediately surrender starving zoo animals to rescue organizations.

Animals are suffering from neglect, starvation and disease at the South Jungle Zoo. The zoo, located in the Gaza strip, was once a popular attraction for families and schoolchildren before armed conflicts brought business to a halt. Now, the owners cannot afford food or proper veterinary care for the animals, leaving them to die from disease and starvation.

The owner of the zoo admitted that animals, including lions, ostriches, crocodiles, and a llama, started dying off when conflict in Gaza surged in 2014. In late 2015, untreated illnesses caused the deaths of a falcon, two monkeys, and a wildcat. Currently, a tiger is dangerously underweight and often goes up to five days without food, while other animals are hungry and shaking from the cold.

While zoo owners admit that they are in over their heads, they refuse to surrender their animals. According to one of the co-owners, they are not working to fix the problem and are instead trying to sell the zoo. If it is not sold, they plan to allow the 20 remaining animals to languish and die.

While the outcome of recent conflicts in Gaza has been tragic, it is imperative that no more unnecessary suffering takes place. Instead of risking the deaths of more animals while waiting for a buyer, the owners should admit defeat and ask rescue organizations to take the animals. Sign the petition below to close this zoo and to demand that immediate efforts are made to re-home the animals to rescue organizations.

Dear Mr. Ouida,

Animals at the South Jungle Zoo have been steadily dying from disease and starvation since 2014 when conflict in Gaza erupted and business slowed to a crawl. Over 80 animals have died so far, and 20 more are in immediate danger of death and permanent health issues. According to a statement made to the media, the animals will be allowed to die off while a buyer is sought for the dilapidated zoo.

While the death, displacement, and destruction in Gaza has been tragic, it is important that no more suffering is allowed. Instead of waiting for a buyer, the remaining animals in the zoo should be surrendered to rescue facilities properly equipped to provide for them. We, the undersigned, demand that you immediately seek to re-home the animals and close the South Jungle Zoo.

  1. No animals should be allowed to starve to death! All of these animals need to be rescued and placed in reputable sanctuaries!

  2. Cecily Colloby says:

It’s a pity the bloody owners aren’t starving to death-bastards.

  3. Each time I sign a petition for the well being of another living being, I lose a little more faith in humanity…it shouldn’t be like this and I’m truly ashamed in my fellow humans.

  4. Clearly these scum haven’t learned a THING about compassion from their people’s own hardships. And what is taking SO long for authorities to step in, if the animals’ abandonment and starvation has been going on since 2014??? – that’s up to 2 YEARS already!!! Useless bunch of heathens, the lot of them!!!

  5. why would you let these innocent animals die? show some compassion and let a rescue come in and get the animals out so they can get medical attention and food

  6. I weep for the innocent.Has nobody any influence?
