Protect Bison from Cruel Population Control

American Bison in Yellowstone

Target: Jonathan B. Jarvis, Director of the National Park Service

Goal: Find a better alternative to slaughtering excess Yellowstone bison.

This year, Yellowstone National Park plans to selectively slaughter, or “cull,” between 600 and 900 bison. Even with new laws set in place to expand their roaming land, these animals are still under strict population control. However, the Fort Peck Native American tribes in Montana can host surplus bison in a quarantined site, saving these bison from being hunted or shipped to slaughter.

Just over a hundred years ago there were only about two dozen bison left in Yellowstone. The National Park has done an amazing job saving these animals from extinction. Now is a chance for them to do more. They are currently working with Montana to update the Interagency Bison Management Plan, which put this ridiculous population control into law. It was said to reduce the risk of bison wandering off and spreading brucellosis to cattle. With Fort Peck’s quarantined site, they can ensure nothing will be spread to surrounding livestock.

Yellowstone is deciding soon on what to do with surplus bison. One of the options is to continue culling the animals, and we must not allow that to happen. The Fort Peck site is the perfect alternative to promote the growth of healthy bison. Bison are an icon of North America and it is our duty to make sure they never come close to extinction again. Show Yellowstone that there is always an alternative to culling.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Jarvis,

I am writing in support of having the Fort Peck quarantine facility be the alternative placement for surplus Yellowstone bison. As the Environmental Assessment shows, they have the ability to care for the bison and ensure that they do not spread brucellosis to neighboring cattle.

As you state on the Yellowstone website, “…Yellowstone bison are an essential part of a complex ecosystem that is much larger than the national park.” This couldn’t be more true. Bison are an icon to all of North America and they deserve to grow safely in their natural habitat. Fort Peck’s facility offers that luxury and can aid Yellowstone in maintaining a healthy bison population.

Thank you for the work you’ve done for the bison population. I ask that you continue your efforts and choose Fort Peck as the preferred alternative for surplus bison.

Sincerely,
