Target: Michigan Governor Rick Snyder

Goal: Demand Governor’s resignation due to the Flint water crisis.

The city of Flint, Michigan is in a state of emergency due to dangerous levels of lead in the public water supply. Recent evidence has determined that Michigan Governor Rick Snyder was aware of the situation for months but decided that saving money was more important than saving the lives of his citizens. A governor who would make such a decision does not deserve his office, and Governor Snyder must own up to his mistakes and resign.

The crisis stems from a 2014 decision sanctioned by the state. Flint chose the local Flint River as its new water supply, as the switch would result in lower costs. Unfortunately for the city’s residents, those involved with this project overlooked one major issue: the water quality of the Flint River. The improperly treated water quickly stripped lead from pipes, creating a number of health concerns.

Although Governor Snyder was not directly responsible for this initial blunder, his handling of the incident and the ensuing fallout has been a disappointment. Under pressure from local and national officials, Snyder’s office released hundreds of e-mails related to the water crisis. These messages prove that Snyder has known about the problem for months, and one email revealed that his chief of staff felt that Flint’s poisoned water was not the state’s responsibility.

As a result of this fiasco, high levels of lead have been poured into the community’s drinking water. More than 8,000 children have been exposed, meaning they will potentially face health risks for the rest of their lives. In a recent interview with CBS, Snyder couldn’t recall the current lead levels in Flint, further lending to the notion that he is ill-equipped to handle this situation.

In the wake of the Flint water crisis, Governor Snyder has shown that he lacks the organization and leadership to guide his state. His questionable handling of initial reports, coupled with his decision to continue using the Flint River after it was proven to be unsafe, indicates that he is no longer qualified to hold his position. Sign the petition below and demand that Governor Rick Snyder resign from his post as Governor.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Snyder,

In light of recent events related to the city of Flint’s water supply, it is clear that the time has come for you to resign. As a result of this fiasco, high levels of lead have been poured into the community’s drinking water and more than 8,000 children have been exposed, meaning they will potentially face health risks for the rest of their lives.

Although you are not directly responsible for the initial mistakes, your handling of the situation has been extremely disappointing. Recent e-mails released by your office revealed that your administration has known about the problem for months, and that your chief of staff felt that Flint’s poisoned water was not the state’s responsibility. These messages serve as proof that you no longer deserve to serve the people of Michigan.

Sincerely,
