Target: Dr. Aziza Askari, Michigan chapter representative of “Who is Hussain?”
Goal: Praise members of Muslim organization for recognizing the urgent need for clean water in Flint and taking action to provide it.
After President Obama declared the Flint water crisis a federal state of emergency, an Islamic organization known as “Who is Hussain?” executed their plan to donate a significant amount of clean, bottled water to the suffering residents of Flint.
“Who is Hussain?” is an international non-profit organization dedicated to spreading the message of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, an Islamic leader that criticized violence and extremism and who was killed by being denied water for days. This man’s life and death was the inspiration for their organization and is also the reason why they felt responsible, as neighbors, to get involved with the Flint water crisis.
Over a year ago, in response to their financial dilemma, Michigan state government made the choice to change the city’s water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River as a temporary money-saver. Ever since the switch occurred, many residents noticed substantial changes in the quality of their water and complained of its abnormality in appearance, odor and taste.
This issue has persisted for close to two years now, and there is suspicion that the EPA chose not to prevent the problem and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality allegedly avoided months of complaints. Little has been done to permanently resolve the crisis.
The absence of governmental action inspired the Michigan chapter of this organization to publicly practice a key religious value–helping your neighbor before helping yourself. They regularly hold charity events, host blood drives and feed the homeless to make everyone a participant in giving back to the community.
With rising Islamophobia in America, moments like these allow us to applaud and encourage the positive and kind actions from the Muslim community. Hopefully with examples like the actions of this organization, others will be inspired to take action in disasters that could be alleviated by a helping hand or a generous donation. Sign this petition to thank “Who is Hussain?” for promoting kindness, generosity, and community in Flint’s hour of need.
Dear Dr. Askari,
I would like to applaud “Who is Hussain?” for recently donating 30,000 filtered water bottles to the residents of Flint, Michigan. Considering their ongoing and unresolved water contamination crisis, your efforts have absolutely served as a beacon of hope in the Flint community. With the local and national governments standing idly by, your organization has actually taken important measures to improve the living conditions of these victims.
In a time and place where Islamophobia is consistently present both subtly and aggressively, it takes a lot of courage to act publicly as a Muslim organization that promotes Islamic values. With kind gestures like the donation of much-needed water, your contributions will help to open citizens’ eyes to the beneficial and constructive efforts of modern Muslims in America.
It is my hope that other people and organizations will follow in your footsteps of compassion and charity. Thank you for acting in solidarity with the Flint community and stepping in to provide such a necessary component to human health and survival during their crisis.
