Justice for Cat Shot to Death By Cop

Domestic Shorthair Cat

Target: North Catasauqua Police Chief Douglas F. Kish

Goal: Punish police officer who reportedly shot and killed someone’s escaped pet cat for no reason.

An escaped indoor pet cat was allegedly shot to death by a police officer who was called to help safely catch her and bring her home. Mike Lienert, the owner of the home where she was found, called the police because he was afraid she was injured. Instead of assisting the citizen, Officer Leighton Pursell reportedly told him to his face that “it may not be politically correct, but if it’s injured we’ll put it down.”

The cat, Sugar, was not injured, merely cautious of the officer, as many cats are of strangers. The officer poked at her when she was found hiding under a grill until she came out and walked over to some steps, then sat down. Other than hissing at him a little, Lienert reports that she was not aggressive and did not seem to be injured at all. Moments later, Officer Pursell blew the innocent cat away and told Lienert that he’d have to “clean up the mess.”

Nothing in this story makes any sense. If most dogs are no threat to armed police officers, then an eight-pound house cat should never be treated with deadly force. These reports paint a picture of a police officer who simply wanted to shoot a defenseless animal. To make things worse, this officer is still on the force and no animal cruelty charges have been filed. Sign our petition to demand that Officer Pursell is fired if these allegations are found to be true.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Kish,

I cannot understand how Sugar the cat ended up dead at the hands of one of your officers when he was simply called to help catch her safely in case she was injured. Officer Leighton Pursell told the man who called the police that he would have to “put it down” if the cat was found to be injured, which doesn’t make sense. Worse, even though it did not appear that Sugar had sustained injury, he shot her at point blank range anyway, killing her.

If it’s your department’s policy to shoot and kill any small domestic pet that appears to be injured, that needs to change immediately. However, no injuries or lacerations were found on the cat’s body other than the gunshot wound. Either way, it certainly seems like any full grown man should be able to handle an eight-pound domestic cat without reaching for his gun.

I understand that an investigation is underway, but there doesn’t seem to be any reasons that an officer should have to resort to gun violence when dealing with someone’s pet cat. Now her owner is stricken with grief because of what Officer Pursell did. I demand that if the investigation finds him guilty, he be immediately removed from the force for unnecessary cruelty.

Sincerely,

Scumbags. Cops used to be the bullies that would pick on us in school. Now they have a badge and gun and can bully whomever they like.

What the hell is wrong with the police in America??? They shoot dogs at the drop of a hat and now harmless cats!!! This cop should be shot himself and got rid of. Why are people like this allowed to exist???

  5. There’s something seriously wrong with this officer. His behavior is unpredictable and his response is erratic. It appears that he just wanted to shoot something without reason. Someone like him shouldn’t have a gun.

  6. I am saddened, sickened and mad as hell by this horrific story of a beloved pet murdered yes murdered by someone paid to serve and protect……. a cop. How can this happen and the main reason that needs to be answered is why. WHY DIDN’T HE CALL ANIMAL CONTROL, USE A NET, USE A TOWEL (EVIDENTLY SINCE HE WAS SCARED TO DEATH OF THE CAT) TAZE IT… BUT DO NOT TAKE OUT HIS RIFLE AND SHOOT IT TO DEATH? PEOPLE ARE ALREADY UPSET WITH COPS AND I KNOW THAT THEY HAVE A REALLY HIGH RISK AND DANGEROUS JOB BUT KILLING PEOPLE BELOVED PETS (THESE HORRIFIC STORIES ARE IN THE NEWS CONSTANTLY NOW) DOES NOT MAKE THIS ANY BETTER IN FACT IT IS MAKING IT WORSE!! PLEASE TRAIN YOUR OFFICERS HOW TO DEAL WITH ANIMALS AND THAT ISN’T TO SHOOT THEM DEAD BECAUSE THEY HISS AT YOU. IF THIS HAD BEEN MY PET MY ATTORNEY WOULD BE HANDLING SUING THE COPS, THE CITY,COUNTY ETC THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED AND THIS COP NEEDS TO BE FIRED BECAUSE OF WHAT HE DID AND SAID WHEN MURDERING SUGAR.

  7. How long does this “investigation” need to last? Really? How about 15 minutes!!! Then fire the useless POS. Maybe a through internal investigation, and a world-wide search for a new officer will make everybody happy. Poor cat. Never stood a chance.

  8. Wendy Morrison says:

This officer should be held responsible for killing theinnocent cat Sugar and given more time of Animal Cruelty charge than an average person because he is a police office a public servant!

  9. This Madness CONTINUES to unfold!!!!!!!!!! WTH is happening here?? All officers must be trained to handle animals, this needs to be Mandatory!!! NOW= Total Responsibility needs to happen-INVESTIGATE/Charge/SEVERELY Punish! This officer should be fired! This won’t bring back this poor baby, BUT= make an EXAMPLE of this case & see that this NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN!!!! ENOUGH OF THIS!!! ZERO EXCUSE, ZERO TOLERANCE for this disgust!!!!! This poor kitty- OMG, RIP~~

  10. Heather Brophy says:

NO BRAIN, NO GUN, NO COP!

  11. What a cowardly POS! Afraid of an eight pound cat? Or are you just a sadistic bastard? Maybe you’re both but either way you need the sh*t kicked out of you and some bones broken and that’s NOT nearly enough! You deserve MUCH worse! Poor Sugar! This breaks my heart!
Fire this bitch! He should NOT be allowed to carry a gun! Next time it’ll be a kid! Oh he/she was crying so I had to take the kid out! I thought they were injured and suffering! You F*cktard! UGH!!! I HATE you!!!

  12. Coward. Definitely should not have a gun. Dangerous evil person

  13. Christine Angwin says:

This poor excuse for a cop should be fired immediately!!! No excuses! What a disgrace that the precinct still has this POS on payroll

  14. How would it even be policy to destroy murder someone’s animal if it were injured?? I’m tired of police acting as if they are above the law. It is illegal to kill a domestic animal.

  15. I wish this filthbag yank oinker pig cop a short and painful life.If I receive notification that this POS has died then I shall conduct a celebratory party. There are very few good oinker pig yank cops. Most are corrupt, lazy, animal murdering POS. They have an international reputation where everyone loathes these trailer trash yank cops.
