Target: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo
Goal: Applaud decision to eliminate coal-powered energy facilities in New York State.
The use of coal could be eliminated in the state of New York by the year 2020, thanks in part to years of active campaigning by environmentalists in the state and across the country. In his annual State of the State address, Governor Cuomo renewed his vow to introduce renewable energy to the economy by laying out a plan to close down New York’s coal-powered energy plants. This development represents an enormous victory for the environment, and the governor’s decision must be celebrated.
According to a report from the Energy Information Administration, New York receives a small (1.3%) amount of its electricity from coal, but Governor Cuomo’s intention is to reduce that number all the way to zero. “Gov. Cuomo has shifted New York’s focus from the energy of the past to the energy of the future. We look forward to working with the administration toward a just and fair transition policy framework for coal affected communities,” said Lisa Dix, the New York senior director for the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign.
During his address, Cuomo reiterated his intention to reduce carbon pollution in New York by 40 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050. He issued a mandate requiring the state to get half of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. In addition, Cuomo pledged to add 300 wind turbines and 150,000 solar panels to select locations in the state.
Cuomo’s promises and policies are now the most progressive in the nation. Similar laws have been passed in Hawaii and California, but Cuomo’s recent announcement sets the new standard in terms of renewable energy. Sign the petition below to thank the governor for his devotion to protecting the planet.
