End Cover Up of Poisoned Water Crisis

Water Pollution

Target: Michigan Governor Rick Snyder

Goal: Release correspondence and other documents related to the decision to allow poisoned water to end up in people’s homes.

Thousands of people have been exposed to lead-contaminated water thanks to massive failures in both the city and state governments of Flint, Michigan. To make things worse, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is clearly hiding information related to the severe poisoning of Flint citizens as he is refusing to release documents and correspondence related to the decision process that allowed this to happen.

Lead exposure is a serious health risk, especially for children. Enough exposure to this toxic substance can cause irreversible brain damage in young kids, stunting their mental and emotional development. This failure to protect public health may have ruined the futures of many children, and the people of Flint deserve answers.

Unfortunately, Michigan is one of two states in the U.S. that has blanket exemptions for the governor’s office from the Freedom of Information Act. It’s only with public pressure that we can get answers about just how deep the corruption and lack of accountability that led to this disaster goes. Sign our petition to demand that Rick Snyder release all documents relating to the poisoning of Flint citizens to the public immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Snyder,

It’s come to light that you’re currently refusing to release numerous documents and pieces of correspondence related to the lead contamination of Flint’s water supply that has led to drastic health problems of the city’s people. This only allows people to speculate on just how deep the corruption and governmental oversight failure runs that precipitated this massive public health crisis.

Just because you’ve somehow gotten yourself an exemption to the Freedom of Information Act doesn’t mean you’re protected from the public eye. You’re in enough hot water already, and refusing to release these documents only makes you look worse. You also have a moral obligation to provide answers to the parents out there who might have to watch their children suffer from developmental difficulties thanks to their exposure to lead contamination.

If you’re not going to step down from the office of governor for your role in this colossal failure that may have ruined the futures of many kids, then you at least need to cooperate with the public in their search for answers. Covering up any aspect of this health crisis will only increase the chances that it will happen again. Do your duty as a public official and tell your citizens the truth about what happened to their city.

Sincerely,
