Target: U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
Goal: Don’t let copper mining companies steal and destroy sacred land belonging to a Native American tribe.
Sacred land in the Tonto National Forest could be bulldozed to create the biggest copper mine in North America if something isn’t done to stop greedy mining companies. Resolution Copper, a subsidiary of Australia’s Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, is planning to strip a massive patch of land in the Tonto National Forest that surrounds the sacred Oak Flat campsite and turn it into a profit machine.
According to the San Carlos Apache tribe, this campsite has been used for countless religious ceremonies, and can be compared to Mount Sinai in the Christian and Jewish religions. The only reason mining companies were even given access to this land was because Arizona Senator John McCain snuck it into a “must pass” defense spending bill late last year. Similar bills had been rejected many times due to the blatant disrespect to yet another Native American tribe in a nation notorious for stealing and exploiting everything these tribes once owned.
Mining this land dry could cause the area to sink by 300 meters, making it essentially inaccessible. Such destruction could never be repaired. At the same time, it would be a huge disruption to the countless animal species living in Tonto National Forest. Sign this petition to demand that a bill be passed to stop this greedy destruction and protect the sacred land from exploitation.
Dear Minority Leader Pelosi,
Sacred Native American land was handed off to foreign mining companies in order to exploit it for copper. Senator McCain snuck in a provision to a must pass bill giving permission to Resolution Copper to strip the land for profits in spite of widespread opposition. The company is now surveying the land, which is projected to sink 300 meters from the mining, making it inaccessible to the public.
This land in the Tonto National Forest has long been used for essential religious ceremonies by the San Carlos Apache tribe. It’s incredibly sacred to them, comparable to Mount Sinai. Allowing it to be devastated beyond repair for the sake of corporate profits is a huge insult to this tribe and would be a tragic loss for them. After all this nation has done to our Native Americans, we can’t let things like this continue to happen.
You can act to save this land from exploitation before it’s too late. Activists are trying to push bills that would ban copper mining on this sacred land in order to protect it from Resolution Copper and any other mining companies. Please make it a priority to either introduce or support bills that will save the land in Tonto National Forest from devastation.
