Target: William J. Howell, Speaker Virginia House of Delegates
Goal: Allow transgender people to use bathrooms representing their true gender identity.
Delegate Mark Cole has proposed a bill that would require transgender people, even school children, to use the bathroom that matches their physical anatomy on all state-owned property. The bill would even allow law-enforcement officers to issue fines of up to $50 for anyone who does not comply with this law. Although the law does not specify how evidence of such a violation would be obtained, both common sense and civil rights activists indicate there’s really only one way – an embarrassing and violating physical inspection of the person in question.
This proposed bill is clearly discriminatory and homophobic at best. At its worst, it denies both adults and children basic civil rights. Tell the Virginia House of Delegates to not pass this degrading bill.
Dear Mr. Howell,
Republican Mark Cole from the 88th District has introduced a bill that violates the basic human rights of transgender individuals. This bill would require all transgender people, including school children, to use the bathroom that matches their physical anatomy. This would apply to all bathrooms on state-owned property and further allows law-enforcement officers to issue violators fines of up to $50. Obtaining evidence of such an infraction would clearly require a physical inspection.
Such a bill is tantamount to government approval of homophobia and discrimination. Passage of this bill would deny transgender people their basic human and constitutional rights. We demand that this bill be removed from any further consideration by the Virginia House of Delegates.
