Target: U.S. President Barack Obama
Goal: Intervene in the imminent collapse of a dam above a city of two million people.
It’s estimated that half a million people will die and another million will be left homeless if nothing is done to stop the imminent failure of the Mosul Dam in Iraq. This dam, part of Saddam Hussein’s legacy, is the largest in the nation, but was unfortunately build on a foundation of water soluble rock salt. The salt is steadily wearing away, and the entire dam could collapse very soon.
Engineers worked hard to maintain the unstable foundation for many years, but their efforts were disrupted when ISIS temporarily gained control of the dam, and the group still has control of some key areas around it. Now, it’s possible that it may be beyond repair. The only options may be to build another dam below or to simply relocate the entire city of Mosul, which consists of two million people. Either way, time is running out.
Iraq needs help now more than ever in order to prevent the possible death of hundreds of thousands of citizens. The U.S. government seemed perfectly willing to intervene before when it seemed that the country needed help. Now is the perfect time to show that it cares even when there don’t appear to be any possible benefits to itself. Sign our petition to demand that President Barack Obama mobilizes whatever resources and people power are needed to help save Mosul from destruction.
Dear President Obama,
Half a million lives are at risk due to the imminent collapse of the Mosul Dam in Iraq. The dam is sitting atop a crumbling foundation that was unable to be properly maintained due to ISIS interference. The likely inevitable failure of the dam could cost more lives in a single day than all of ISIS has taken. Iraq desperately needs our help.
Experts estimate that when the 66-foot wall of water hits the city of Mosul, containing two million people, half a million could die and another million could be left homeless. Engineers think they could stop the devastation by building another dam below the Mosul dam, but the close proximity of ISIS and lack of time makes this difficult. If a new dam isn’t completed by the Spring, ice packs will start melting and the resulting swell of the river could cause it to quickly collapse.
The United States has plenty of resources it could send to support or directly aid in the building of a new dam and/or get the people of Mosul evacuated before the old dam fails. Please to everything in your power to save the innocent people of Mosul from incredible devastation and loss.
