Target: Chicago Board of Education President Frank Clark
Goal: Provide nutritious meals for high school students.
Roosevelt high school students are demanding more appetizing and nutritious options for their daily lunches. Since the district began participating in a federally subsidized program two years ago, the school has seen a decrease in the number of students choosing hot lunch. This is because students say that the food they are being offered not only lacks nutritional value but is also poor quality and often times inedible.
With rates of childhood obesity and diabetes soaring, it should go without saying that children should be provided with healthy options during school hours. The students of Roosevelt High School have proposed several options to provide them with affordable and nutritious lunches, such as vending machines with whole foods, freshly prepared hot lunches, and open campus lunch hour. Currently, the most frequently served entrees are pizza, cheeseburgers, and chicken patties, which are highly processed. Students have documented the questionable quality of these items by posting pictures of their lunches online. Photos show undercooked meat, burned cheese, and, in general, unappetizing food.
Catering giant Aramark currently provides these so-called meals. It should be noted Aramark also provides food services to correctional facilities and recently ended one of these contracts due to issues regarding employee misconduct and maggots being found in the kitchen. Our students deserve better than typical junk food. Proper nutrition is a basic right and access to healthy meals is unfortunately difficult for many students. It is the school’s duty to provide options to support children’s health and development. Please sign this petition to urge Chicago Board of Education President Frank Clark to institute students’ requests and provide nutritious meals at Roosevelt High School.
Dear President Clark,
Proper nutrition is an essential part of every child’s growth and development. Providing children with improper nutrition is like putting cheap gas in a high performance vehicle. The children of America are currently suffering from elevated rates of obesity and diabetes. Many children do not have access to whole nutritious foods at home and many depend on their school lunches to provide them with their daily nourishment.
The students of Roosevelt High School have unanimously spoken and demand higher quality lunches. They are acutely aware of the effects their poor diets are having on their well-being and are justified in their cause. We cannot adequately nourish the minds of our youth if their bodies aren’t adequately nourished. Please provide the students of Roosevelt High School with a variety of options so that they may continue to grow into healthy productive citizens.
