Target: Maine Governor Paul LePage
Goal: Resign from post over frequent racist and sexist remarks.
Governor Paul LePage responded with a shockingly racist remark when confronted about Maine’s heavy drug problem, saying that men from Connecticut and New York “with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty” come into Maine to sell heroin and “impregnate a young, white girl.” LePage attempted to do his own damage control, but ended up defending his own claims with a dumbfounding half-apology.
In a news conference, LePage apologized for “many slip-ups,” but blamed the liberal media for catching all of his racist remarks, and stood by his claim of “young, white girl,” since “we [Maine] are essentially 95% white.” He also said he never put a race connotation on the nicknames and that race is irrelevant to this situation, even with his own “white girl” claim. LePage is confronting the heroin problem by targeting drug traffickers, but notably cut funding for rehab centers.
The apology, somehow, was even more racist than his original impromptu claims. LePage has a lengthy history of racist and sexist remarks. In 2011, he told a local NAACP chapter to “kiss my butt.” In 2012, he called the IRS “the new Gestapo,” and in 2013 he accused a fellow politician of claiming “to be for the people but he’s the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline.” This is just a small portion of the highly offensive remarks to come from the governor.
Multiple investigations have been conducted against his office for various reasons, and after these racist remarks there has been word of a proposed impeachment. But so far, LePage has faced little consequence for his consistent hateful rhetoric. His backwards views do not represent America’s progression, and his time in office has been ruled by nepotism and personal politics. Sign to demand he step down and let a real politician take over.
Dear Governor LePage,
Your remarks about out-of-state drug dealers have shown that Maine, and America, has had just about enough of Paul LePage. It is absolutely ludicrous to blame your state’s drug problem on the non-existent “D-Money” from New York, when your own office cut funding for rehab centers.
It’s time to wake up and see that Maine’s problems are based on your tenure as governor. You claim race was not a factor in your “D-Money” comments, and followed it up with “we are essentially 95% white.” This backwards logic does not represent America’s progression.
I urge you to listen to constituents and American people and resign from your post. Your legacy as governor is known for scandals and shameful remarks, not for any policy changes or legislature. You and your office are falling far behind the rest of the country and it is time to step down and let someone else take over.
You have a responsibility as the leader of Maine, and you are not fulfilling it. If you find yourself constantly having to apologize and wonder why everything you say makes people so upset, it might be time to figure out why–it is not our fault for the outrage. Governor LePage, either straighten your ways or step down.
