Save Millions of Birds From Slow Deaths in Glue Traps

Target: European Union Director-General for Environment, Daniel Calleja Crespo

Goal: Take effective steps to end the hunt of millions of birds using inhumane glue traps.

Each year, millions of wild birds end up glued to branches before being crushed, drowned or cooked alive. An estimated 25 million thrushes, larks, robins and other birds are illegally caught and killed during their yearly migration to Southern Europe. Despite these cruel practices being against the law, thousands of hunters in Italy, France, Spain and other Mediterranean countries are allowed to get away with trapping, torturing and slaughtering millions of birds each year.

Glue-trapping involves covering twigs, branches and other surfaces in a thick, sticky substance in which birds become stuck and from which they cannot escape. Trapped birds writhe around distressed, tearing out feathers and breaking their own wings in an effort to get free. Those who survive until they are found have their necks broken, their eyes gouged out, are crushed or drowned and end up fried and served as food in local eateries.

Moreover, several of the species caught are severely endangered. Many untargeted birds wind up caught in the glue-traps as well, as this hunting method is far from being selective. Blackcaps, warblers and owls easily fall prey to the birdsong recordings hunters use to attract the birds. Sadly, these horrific practices are growing and contributing to the decimation of birds in Europe. A recent assessment revealed that a fifth of European birds are at risk of extinction.

Despite the extent of this barbaric practice, local authorities and European officials continue to turn a blind eye to the illegal hunting of migratory birds. These beautiful birds should be able to migrate safely and do not deserve to meet such unnecessary and horrific deaths. Sign this petition urging European authorities to act fast to end the atrocious and massive yearly hunt of migratory birds.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Environment Director-General Calleja Crespo,

Each year, an estimated 25 million birds end up in inhumane glue-traps across Southern Europe. Numerous birds, including thrushes, larks, quails and robins, are killed in this way as they undertake their yearly southbound migration. Some of these species are severely endangered and this widespread practice has contributed to one-fifth of European birds being at high risk of extinction. Indeed, glue traps are far from being selective and blackcaps, warblers, owls and other untargeted animals easily fall prey to the birdsong recordings hunters use to lure the birds.

Birds who get stuck in glue traps writhe around distressed, tearing out feathers and breaking their own wings in an effort to get free. They then have their necks broken and are crushed or drowned to end up fried and served as food.

Despite these cruel practices being illegal, hunters in Italy, France, Spain and other Mediterranean countries are allowed to get away with trapping, torturing and slaughtering millions of birds each year. These animals deserve to be protected while they undertake their vital annual migration. Please take urgent steps to put a stop to the illegal hunting of migratory birds.

Sincerely,

even if these only killed the intended victim.. they are still horribly cruel and inhumane and I can’t even believe that someone who calls them selves a HUMAN being could use them at all.

    save them

  3. Again, Neanderthals continue to murder and pillage innocent creatures who are not fortunate enough to be higher up on the chain. What gives them the right? Stop them in their tracks. 🙁

WHEN WILL THE CRUELTY AND GREED OF THE UNSPEAKABLE BLOODY HUMAN RACE EVER END???????

  6. Lisbeth Alvarado Sanchez says:

Words cant express the anger and frustration every time I learn about how innocent animals suffer in the hands of human scumbags. Where is the respect towards all living creatures? Is this the way humans show their development and intelligence? It only demonstrate that we are very far away from being the smartest and civilized species in the planet.

  7. European Union Director-General for Environment, DANIEL CALLEJA CRESPO and others in this “environmental group”: WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD REQUEST THAT “workers” go in the woods and spread GLUE TRAPS so millions of wild birds end up glued to branches before being crushed, drowned or cooked alive? Who would do that?????????????????
I know the answer to this, but I cannot publicly write it.

What you guys are doing is slaughtering birds, nothing to promote tourism in your counties. SHAME ON YOU ALL. End the hunt of millions of birds using inhumane glue traps.

It is public knowledge that Italy, France, Spain and other Mediterranean countries are allowed to get away with trapping, torturing and slaughtering millions of birds each year.

  8. And the cat-haters claim it’s CATS who are decimating wild bird populations?! Just more BS they fling around, when all the INTELLIGENT and INFORMED people know it’s HUMANS’ fault! It’s bad enough that glue traps are used for rodents, but now birds, too? What a truly disgusting species homo sapiens has turned into.

  9. How cruel & unconscionable! — How immoral! — Where’s the rationality? — Where’s the compassion? — STOP and PENALIZE these idiots — we must stop the suffering inflicted on these birds.
