Target: SandRidge Energy President and Chief Executive Officer, James D. Bennett
Goal: Shut down six earthquake-causing oil wells.
The drilling of oil has been linked to the rise of earthquakes in Oklahoma. The Sooner State recently had one of its biggest earthquakes on record, yet oil companies like SandRidge Energy still refuse to stop operations. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission has asked SandRidge to shut-in (close) six of their wells. In explaining their refusal SandRidge spokesman David Kimmel said, “This is a complex issue, and science must be our guide as we work together to address it.”
If SandRidge would like to listen to science, then they should know that the U.S. Geological Survey has already said that injecting wastewater underground causes earthquakes. This salty wastewater is produced any time gas and oil is taken from the ground. More than one billion barrels of brine are forces underground in Oklahoma a year. This explains the sudden rise in earthquakes. In 2013 Oklahoma only had 3 earthquakes that were a 4.0 or greater. Last week alone Oklahoma had 4.
These earthquakes have caused power outages and infrastructure damage to both businesses and homes. Residents whose homes were fine five years ago now have cracks running up and down them. Many do not know if their house can sustain much more. State Representative Richard Morrissette stated what many citizens are wondering, “How much evidence do we need, to know that there is a problem here?”
There is a problem, but there is also a solution. The solution is shutting down earthquake-causing oil wells. While many companies are working together with the OCC, SandRidge Energy is not. They are fighting for profits and against the people.
Dear Mr. Bennett,
Oil and gas drilling have been linked directly to earthquakes by scientists. With current studies done by the U.S. Geological Survey, we can no longer deny this link. Your company, SandRidge Energy, has been asked to shut-in six wells by the Oklahoma Corporation Committee. I am urging you to shut-in these wells before any larger and more devastating earthquakes hit the Oklahoma people.
Please put the lives and well being of the Oklahoma people before profits. The residents you employ will no longer be able to live and work there if earthquakes continue to crumble their homes. I ask again that you shut-in the recommended six wells and work with the OCC on any future recommendations.
