Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Thank President Obama and his administration for funding the fight against poaching in South Africa.
President Obama took a huge step in the direction of wildlife preservation by investing millions of dollars into the fight to end poaching in South Africa. Over a thousand rhinos are killed every year for their horns, and in only three years, 100,000 African elephants were slaughtered for their tusks.
The illegal trade of ivory is threatening wildlife with extinction, yet the demand for it proceeds to increase every year, making it nearly a $20 billion dollar enterprise. While initially the greatest market for ivory was found in Asian countries, evidence has proven that the market is now rising in Western countries as well, including the United States, which has been singled out as the second largest market for illegal wildlife trade in the world.
Rangers and armed forces have been brought in throughout the last few decades to protect these animals, but thousands have been murdered in the process. Poachers are proving to be a threat to not only animals, but to people as well. Additionally, the illegal importing of wildlife products is also threatening national and international security as many smugglers are now trading ivory for weaponry.
The Obama Administration plans to use the funding on country-to-country training in order to combat the trade. Funds will go to training prosecutors and judges in Africa to combat the illegal sales of wildlife products, training non-government wildlife organizations on investigative anti-poaching strategies, and investing in applicable surveillance equipment used to identify poachers and illegal traders.
Thank President Obama and his administration for undertaking this international crisis and protecting our wildlife.
Dear President Obama,
Your decision to fund the battle against wildlife poaching and illegal trading of wildlife goods is a huge step in the direction of animal conservation and protecting international safety. The population of African elephants alone has decreased by 64 percent in the last decade, rhinoceroses are facing extinction, thousands of rangers and members of the military have been murdered trying to protect them, and our own safety is being compromised due to the high number of weaponry trading that is associated with it.
I applaud you for making prolific use of our resources and becoming actively involved in putting an end to this dangerous and horrific trade. Your advocacy, support and participation in this national crisis brings the world one step closer to rebuilding and preserving the African wildlife population as well as protecting the people who are effected by this illegal enterprise.
