Denounce Saudi Arabia for Executing Dissidents

Target: United States President Barack Obama

Goal: Denounce U.S. ally Saudi Arabia for executing Shiite dissident and committing various other human rights abuses.

A Shiite cleric was executed in Saudi Arabia for speaking out against the persecution of this religious minority in the country and the royal family’s role in the violence against them. Despite this being a clear act of oppression and a massive violation of the American value of freedom of speech and religion, the U.S. government, including President Obama, has failed to speak out against this execution.

For decades, Saudi Arabia has been given a pass on human rights violations because of its status as an important ally to the U.S. Despite the country being one of the worst in terms of religious persecution and subjugation of women, it’s not criticized the way other Middle Eastern nations like Iran are by the U.S. government. Experts widely believe this is because Saudi Arabia has served as an important source of oil as well as a strategic location in the Middle East. The Saudi government also provides helpful intelligence about Iran.

However, no amount of damaging fossil fuels or military intelligence is worth allowing the rampant inequality and subjugation going on in Saudi Arabia. It’s time that the U.S. do more than send out passive-aggressive warnings. It needs to directly condemn the nation for this execution and all of its human rights abuses and stop supporting the Saudi government if it refuses to clean up its act. Sign to demand that President Obama denounce this brutal government.

Dear President Obama,

Recently, a dissident Shiite cleric was executed in Saudi Arabia for challenging the government on its role in the nation-wide prejudice against this religious minority. I’m sure you’ll agree that this is a clear violation of freedom of speech and religion, yet you have not called out the Saudi royal family for this execution.

I understand that Saudi Arabia is an ally to the United States. However, the reasons for this are unacceptable considering the rampant human rights violations that are allowed to go on and in fact encouraged and perpetuated by the royal family. We should be divesting from oil, and we’re supposed to be reducing our presence in the Middle East. It’s time to stand up to this brutal government.

Stop supporting a government that represents everything the United States is supposed to be against, including religious persecution and the subjugation of women. Denounce the Saudi royal family for this execution and their persecution of the Shiite people.
