Target: General Frank J. Grass, of The National Guard
Goal: Intervene in an armed stand-off and stop a racial double standard.
A group of armed ranchers have been holed up in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters in Burns, Oregon. The men are demanding more freedoms for ranchers from the national government. The incident started after two members of the Hammond family were arrested for setting fires on government land. Members of the Bundy family – father Cliven had his own infamous standoff with the government last year – intervened and helped take over the building. Because of the holidays, no employees were in the building so the men barricaded themselves inside.
The men have remained peaceful and claim to stay that way, but they are armed, and the local Sheriff’s office has publicly said that the men secretly hope to start a national movement to overthrow the government. They are currently asking for free reign over land, although acts like the fires being set could have been done simply with proper permits.
Although local law enforcement and the FBI have gotten involved to try and bring an end to the standoff, there has been no response from the National Guard. The Guard has been lambasted on social media for their lack of involvement with many people claiming it sets up a double standard. The Guard was too prevalent at Ferguson, where they relentlessly teargassed scores of innocent people, but they have denied interest in white people who are armed and potentially dangerous. The National Guard exists to take on national crises, and their lack of current involvement in Oregon sets a negative image for themselves.
Dear General Frank J. Grass,
The lack of involvement of the National Guard in the Oregon crisis crisis is concerning. Armed men dubbing themselves “militia” have taken over a government building and have demanded senseless changes to laws regarding the land they inhabit. They have remained peaceful so far but growing concerns that they are trying to birth a movement to overthrow the government is frightening and potentially treasonous.
The National Guard should be involved in the situation, as it presents a local and potentially national crisis. Armed men taking over a government building could result in violence, and the Guard. The guard is trained for situations like this. The intense violence against innocent people conducted by the Guard in Ferguson is still in the memory of the American people and, by not showing up in Oregon, you are setting a racist double standard, proving that armed white men can have their way.
I am urging you to send troops to Oregon to handle the standoff started by these militia men. They are armed and angry, and the violence they are capable of would be worse than the peaceful protests in Ferguson.
