Target: Morelos state Governor Graco Ramirez
Goal: Prosecute the armed gunmen who killed newly elected mayor of Temixco, Gisela Mota.
On Friday, January 1, 2016, Gisela Mota formally took office as mayor in Temixco, Morelos, Mexico. She was a former federal Congress member and the first female mayor elected in Temixco. Within 24 hours, four armed gunmen allegedly entered her home and shot her in the head. She was pronounced dead at 7:50 am on Saturday, January 2, 2016. After the shooting, suspects reportedly attempted to flee the scene in a van and engaged in a firefight with local police, resulting in the death of two of the suspects. The other two were reportedly taken into police custody.
Mayor mortality in the country of Mexico is high. Armed gangs financed with money from the drug trade control the towns and local communities. These gang members do not make any particular party a target of their violence. Last year, members of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico, the Presidential Opposition Party, the Party of the Democratic Revolution, and more have all been victims of the fatal violence caused by the thugs of the drug cartels.
It is particularly dangerous for individuals campaigning for office and elected officials in the country of Mexico. Demand that the the governor of Morelos prosecute the two armed gunmen allegedly responsible for killing Mota to show that he will not tolerate the violence caused by the drug trade.
Dear Governor Ramirez,
One day after formally taking the office of mayor of Temixco, Morelos, Mexico, Gisela Mota was allegedly shot in the head in her own home by four armed gunmen. The police reportedly chased down the fleeing suspects, engaging in an on-road firefight that resulted in two suspect fatalities and the apprehension of the other two suspects.
The mortality rate for mayoral candidates and elected officials in Mexico is inadmissible, and caused mostly by armed gangs financed by the drug trade. This is unacceptable and needs to end. We the undersigned urge you to prosecute the two gunmen allegedly responsible for killing Mota and demonstrate that the state of Morelos will not stand for this type of violence.
