Target: New Hampshire State Rep. Al Baldasaro
Goal: Denounce a male legislator who attacked a female colleague by insulting her nipples after she spoke out against a sexist bill.
A male politician is refusing to apologize for making a lewd and misogynistic personal attack upon a female legislator on Facebook. New Hampshire Representative Amanda Bouldin was expressing her opposition to a sexist bill being pushed by male Republican state lawmakers that specifically bans women from showing their nipples in public while allowing men to do the same. Rep. Al Baldasaro responded by saying: “No disrespect, but your nipple would be the last one I would want to see.”
This is an incredibly juvenile and vulgar response to reasonable criticisms of a bill that clearly targets women, and it is no way for a politician responsible for helping to lead the people of an entire state to behave. It’s also clearly shows his misogynistic attitudes, since personal attacks on one’s sexual appearance are almost never visited upon men.
Baldasaro has since explicitly refused to apologize for this comment. He needs to know that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated. It should not be tolerated from little children, let alone from adult lawmakers. Sign our petition to demand that Baldasaro act like a grown up and apologize to Representative Bouldin for his hateful and sexually harassing personal attack.
Dear Representative Baldasaro,
I understand that you recently posted an incredibly personal attack on a fellow lawmaker’s Facebook post in which she was criticizing a piece of legislation that you support. Rather than engaging in mature, adult discussion about her concerns, you chose to comment on her nipples, saying: “No disrespect, but your nipple would be the last one I would want to see.”
Clearly, you meant plenty of disrespect. Representative Bouldin was pointing out the sexism in a bill that singles out women to restrict their bodies in public. Attacking her with the exact same kind of sexism only reinforces her point about the attitudes of the men who are backing this bill. This comment was gross, lewd, and juvenile, and is reminiscent of the sexual harassment that many women still have to face in the workplace today.
As a representative of your state, you need to act like an adult. Adults don’t attack the appearance of the body parts of their colleagues in response to a disagreement. You’re providing an extremely poor example of how people should conduct themselves when dealing with colleagues who deserve basic human respect and decency. We demand that you immediately apologize to both Representative Bouldin and your constituents who expect better from you.
