Praise Ben & Jerry’s for Developing Non-Dairy Ice Cream Line

Target: Ben & Jerry’s CEO, Jostein Solheim

Goal: Applaud Ben & Jerry’s commitment to developing a non-dairy and vegan line of ice cream.

Major ice cream manufacturer Ben & Jerry’s recently announced its plans to release a non-dairy version of its famous flavors in 2016. Moreover, this line of ice cream will also be vegan, with no honey, eggs or other animal ingredients used. This move came after persistent customer demand for vegan alternatives, including a petition on signed by 28,432 people.

Considering the wide variety of non-dairy milks and creams already available in supermarkets worldwide, as well as freezer aisles in the U.S. already stocking a number of soy, coconut or almond-based ice creams, it was about time the ice cream mogul B&J developed a non-dairy and vegan line of their own.

Non-dairy alternatives are not only in demand for the 65 percent of the human population with lactose intolerance, but also for consumers intent on making compassionate and environmentally friendly choices. Indeed, dairy production is not only an incredibly cruel process where cows are routinely and forcibly impregnated before having their calves torn away from them — this happens in even the most “humane” dairy farms — but also an extremely polluting activity. Animal agriculture is the largest contributor to global warming, surpassing even the world’s transportation industry in its production of greenhouse gases.

Offering a non-animal product line of ice cream is a huge step forward for Ben & Jerry’s, signaling to consumers that cruelty-free and environmentally-conscious alternatives are mainstream and that being ethical does not mean having to give up delicious desserts. Sign this petition thanking Ben & Jerry’s for committing to provide non-dairy and vegan alternatives.

Dear Mr. Solheim,

I would like to applaud Ben & Jerry’s commitment toward developing a non-dairy and vegan ice cream line. Considering the variety of non-dairy milks available nowadays, and the fact that your customers have been asking for such a move for years — a recent petition drew 28,432 signatories — it was high time for Ben & Jerry’s to add a vegan line to its offerings. This move will not only benefit the 65 percent of the human population who is lactose intolerant but also consumers committed towards eating healthier and more ethical products.

As you are certainly aware, dairy production is one of the most polluting businesses on earth. Animal agriculture is the single largest contributor to global warming with its greenhouse gas emissions exceeding those of the entire transportation industry. Moreover, obtaining dairy from cows is a cruel process involving these gentle animals being repeatedly impregnated and having each one of their calves taken away from them at an early age. This practice even occurs in free-range, organic and so-called “humane” farms.

It is my hope that B&J’s new vegan products will come to replace the dairy line by virtue of their widespread health, environmental and ethical advantages, thus allowing the company to fully embody the ethical persona it has been assuming for years. Thank you for bringing your company a step closer to this ethical stance by developing this new vegan line of ice cream.
