Remove Border Fence Bisecting Crucial Wildlife Habitat

Target: Borut Pahor, President of Slovenia

Goal: Take down a barbed-wire fence meant to keep out refugees that is bisecting wildlife habitat and migration routes.

Wildlife is suffering from a fence that was erected at the border of Slovenia and Croatia to keep out refugees from Syria and other war-torn countries in the region. The fence bisects wildlife habitat and animals cannot cross into either country, limiting their habitat range. Deer have been caught in the fence and have been seen tangled and tormented in the barbed-wire boundary. We must demand that this fence be take down immediately, not only for wildlife but also suffering refugees.

The land at the border of Croatia and Slovenia is rich in wildlife and biodiversity. A variety of wildlife species live here, including red deer, wild boar, martens, otters, bear and the endangered lynx. The fence, erected by Slovenia, stretches 85 miles along the border of Croatia in this wildlife habitat.

The fence obstructs the annual migration route of many species of wildlife that live in the area, including roe and red deer. If the deer cannot get passed the fence to reach their usual lowland plain, they will be stuck in snow and colder temperatures in the winter, reducing the deer’s chance for survival. Furthermore, the endangered lynx is already reduced to 60 to 75 individuals in the region. The lynx suffers from genetic diversity and the fence only creates another obstacle for this dwindling species.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants have fled wars and poverty and have traveled toward the region for refuge. The fence between Slovenia and Croatia is meant to block the path of migrants. Wildlife and refugees are suffering due to the cold heart of man. By signing this petition, you are demanding that the President of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, take action now to remove this fence that limits the potential of humans and wildlife.

Dear President Pahor,

Refugees are not the only ones suffering due to the fence you have erected at the border of Croatia. This 85-mile long fence bisects crucial wildlife habitat. Animals suffer due to your lack of compassion for war-torn and poverty-stricken refugees.

I am writing to you to demand that you take this fence down immediately for the sake of wildlife in the region. This area is rich in biodiversity and a variety of wildlife species live there, including roe and red deer, bears, wild boar, and the endangered lynx. The fence acts as a barrier to migration routes and limits access to other wildlife populations. Furthermore, animals that attempt to jump the fence, especially deer, get caught in the painful barbed-wire.

Please take action and remove the fence at the Slovenian and Croatian border for the benefit of refugees and wildlife.

  1. I just signed this petition for the sake of wildlife NOT for illegal human migrators.
