Launch Federal Investigation Into Police Killing of 12-Year-Old Boy

Target: United States Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch

Goal: Launch a federal investigation into the shooting of a black child playing with a toy gun within two seconds of the encounter.

No charges will be leveled against a police officer who shot and killed a 12-year-old black boy playing with a toy in a local park within two seconds of getting out of his police car. The boy, Tamir Rice, was minding his own business in a park across the street from his home when someone called 911 to report him, saying to the dispatcher that the gun was probably fake but they were concerned anyway. Minutes later, he was dead.

According to reports, the information that the gun was likely fake did not make it to the officer on the scene, yet the dispatcher has not been held responsible for this. A video taken by a local surveillance camera also clearly shows an extremely limited amount of time between the point that the officer left his squad car and the time he fired his gun, giving Rice very little time to respond to or even comprehend orders from the officer.

To make things worse, the officer then failed to attempt to provide any kind of first aid care to the dying boy, instead standing around for four minutes until EMTs arrived on the scene. Had he deigned to try and help the incapacitated child, Tamir Rice might be alive. Yet in spite of all this, it was just announced that there will be no indictment against the officer who shot this child.

All of these factors combined with the many cases of white people with real guns who manage to come out of police encounters alive and unharmed point to a serious racial issue. This means that the federal government has an obligation to get involved as it is supposed to protect people from miscarriages of justice, especially those possibly motivated by racism or other forms of prejudice.

Sign our petition to demand that the U.S. attorney general step in and conduct a full investigation into the police officers, the department, the prosecutor who failed to get an indictment, and everyone else involved in this travesty.

Dear Attorney General Lynch,

As you are likely aware, it was just announced that there will not be any charges brought against the police officer who shot and killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice for sitting in a playground and playing with a toy. Due to the many alarming details surrounding this case, this appears to be an incredible miscarriage of justice.

It’s bad enough that this officer shot the child only two seconds after exiting the car, giving Rice no time to comply with any orders or even figure out what was happening before he was mortally wounded. After that, the officer failed to even attempt to give any first aid to the dying boy, even though it was well within his training and ability. Plus, the dispatcher of the 911 call failed to let officers know that the original caller said the gun was likely a fake.

Black Americans across the nation are wondering why this child had to die when so many white adults with clearly real guns walk away from police encounters without a scratch. Something is clearly foul in our justice system and somebody needs to be held accountable. We demand a federal investigation into the shooting of Tamir Rice, everyone involved in his death, and the failure to indict this officer.
