Denounce Ted Cruz’s Vow to Ignore Paris Climate Deal

Ted Cruz

Target: Senator Ted Cruz

Goal: Denounce presidential candidate for pledging to back out of the first worldwide agreement to fight climate change.

Republican Presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz recently stated he would withdraw from the climate deal that was reached in Paris this year. He claims that the agreement was reached not as an attempt to curb the disastrous effects of man-made climate change, but instead as a play for increased government power. His reasoning is that the approximately 200 countries who signed the non-binding agreement are ideologues who are ignoring the facts and are only interested in “more and more government power.”

The climate deal was reached as an effort not only to combat climate change itself – considered a security threat by the Department of Defense – but also the related impact of food shortages, extinction rates and sea-level rise. Cruz denies that these threats exist, and has held conferences discussing what he purports to be inaccuracies in scientific data. This is after he has already mistaken the Arctic for the Antarctic to argue that ice melt predictions were incorrect, as well as attempting to discredit climate researchers and scientists by comparing them to “flat-Earthers.”

Denounce Ted Cruz for his disinformation campaign against climate change, and the potentially devastating effect reneging on the Paris climate deal could have.

Dear Senator Cruz,

Breaking the promise to uphold the agreement reached in Paris regarding climate change would be a monumentally bad decision, not only for the United States but the planet. This historic agreement was reached unanimously – an unprecedented achievement in a geopolitical sense – yet you seem to be fixated on some fantasy of a secret agenda by Barack Obama and almost 200 other heads of state to seize more government power.

Your rhetoric that U.S. citizens have more to fear from radical Islamic terrorists than global catastrophe resulting from climate change, as well as your willful ignorance and distorting of scientific facts, serve only to cause needless confusion and possibly harm. Even your own party is not in favor of ignoring the Paris deal, as at least 58 percent of Republicans support working with other countries to combat the numerous problems related to global warming. These include the looming threats of food shortages, flooding from rising sea-levels, and increased extinction rates, all asserted by leading scientists whom you have chosen to mock.

Your vows to ignore an internationally brokered deal to save the planet are coming from a place of ignorance of the facts and the wishes of the people. Shame on you for clouding the argument and attempting to obstruct the path to a better world.

  1. Yes, I’m a UK citizen and shouldn’t involve myself in US affairs but everything the US does affects us all.
Our own government is reluctant to change, I was hoping that the US could shame us into being more responsible!
