Don’t Take Donations Away From Single Mother with Cancer Patient Daughter

Target: City Attorney Pete Holmes, Seattle, Washington

Goal: Don’t revoke state assistance from mother of disabled son and bone cancer-stricken teen, and allow them to accept the donations sent to a GoFundMe page set up just for them.

A mother of two children—a disabled son and a 15-year-old daughter who has bone cancer and already lost a leg from it two years ago—reportedly faces the threat of having their government funding taken away because of a GoFundMe donation page that was set up to help with the family’s financial struggles. Demicka Gilmore was reportedly told that she would have to give up her state assistance, including her daughter’s medical assistance that covers cancer treatment, if she accepted the donations already sent by generous people. Gilmore is unable to work since she spends most of her time taking care of her cancer-stricken teenager at home.

Demicka reportedly lost her home, then her job, and the family was homeless before turning to the state for assistance with food and housing. The previously homeless family is already struggling enough with the tragedy of the 15-year-old who’s suffering from bone cancer. It would be heartless and cruel for the little funding they receive to be taken from them all because they may receive some donations to help out. The donation page shouldn’t even be a concern of the states.

Please sign the petition below to demand that Demicka and her children be allowed to accept the generous donations without having their necessary funding taken away.

Dear Seattle City Attorney Mr. Pete Holmes,

A previously homeless family had to turn to state assistance when the single mother of two lost her job due to her teenage daughter’s bone cancer, which has already claimed one of the young girl’s legs. This family has struggled and suffered enough, but they’re reportedly being forced to give up donations sent to them via a GoFundMe donations page, or either give up the necessary state assistance.

This ultimatum is cruel and heartless. The family should be allowed to accept the donations already sent to the page by the compassionate people who heard of their struggle. Please do everything possible to help see to it that this poor family be allowed to accept the donations and still receive the financial assistance they need to survive.
