Release Suffering Polar Bears to Canada Habitat

Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat

Target: Douglas Myers President/CEO, San Diego Zoo Global

Goal: Urge the San Diego Zoo to release polar bears to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Canada.

It’s 64 degrees Fahrenheit on Christmas Eve in San Diego, California. Wintertime hardly ever gets any colder in Southern California, and summer temperatures average in the mid-70s. In the wild, polar bears spend most of their time swimming among the arctic sea ice. Needless to say, San Diego is far too warm for a polar bear to enjoy a comfortable living environment. Urge the San Diego Zoo to release its polar bears to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Canada, where they can lead happier, healthier lives.

As a Christmas present, San Diego Zoo gave its polar bears 26 tons of snow over the last week, even though an appropriate polar bear environment should always be filled with snow. What’s more, the rare snow that the polar bears were gifted has already melted, as is evidenced in the extremely depressing images from the San Diego Zoo’s “polar cam.” Viewers can easily witness the sad and sluggish behavior of the polar bears year-round to their burst of happiness during the short time they spent in the snow.

Denying the polar bears the temperatures and accurate surroundings of their wild habitat is animal cruelty. The polar bears are suffering in these completely unnatural conditions. Polar bears have a thick layer of body fat to protect them from the cold but, against the heat, it only serves to warm them even more. Demand that the San Diego Zoo release its polar bears to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Canada immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Myers,

Winter temperatures in San Diego fluctuate within the mid 60’s—nowhere near arctic temperatures. The 26 tons of snow that were given to the polar bears has already melted and so has any cover to the real cruelty that they experience every day.

Denying the polar bears the temperatures and accurate surroundings of their wild habitat is animal cruelty. These polar bears are suffering in these completely unnatural conditions. Polar bears have a thick layer of body fat to protect them from the cold, but against the heat, it only serves to warm them even more.

At the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Canada, previously orphaned or captive polar bears are given the best possible environment, including low temperatures and snow all year round. Giving the bears snow for a couple of days was a sad attempt at publicity, that only served to put into perspective how inadequate the polar bear enclosure is for the bears. Want better press? Release the suffering San Diego Zoo polar bears to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Canada, where they can spend the rest of their lives active and happy, not just for a few hours a year.

Sincerely,
