Target: Dan Wyant, Director of the Department of Environmental Quality in Michigan
Goal: Clean up water supply poisoned with lead and reprimand those involved in the decision to poison a community.
A state of emergency has been declared in Flint, Michigan after the lead content in the water reached toxic levels. Those who drank this water developed symptoms associated with lead poisoning. Urge the Department of Environmental Quality in Michigan to initiate a full clean up of the Flint water supply and hold accountable all those involved in the poisoning of the Flint residents.
Michigan politicians made the budget-motivated decision to switch to a cheaper source of drinking water. Shortly after they began drinking from the new supply, many residents became ill. Their symptoms included hair loss, rashes, hypertension, and cognitive delay. Children experienced shortened attention spans, difficulty in concentrating, and increased antisocial behavior. Blood tests conclusively showed a higher than normal amount of lead in the blood of those affected. Residents petitioned for a return to a healthy source of drinking water but were met with resistance. They were advised to boil their water or use filters. It took over a year for Governor Dan Snyder to revert back to a nontoxic water source.
The symptoms of lead poisoning are often irreversible. The victims of this health crisis will deal with its effects for the rest of their lives. The city will likely see a greater need for affordable healthcare and supplemental educational programs to compensate for the effects of this toxic exposure. Urge the Department of Environmental Quality to secure a safe cleanup of the water supply and punish those responsible for this toxic decision.
Dear Director Wyant,
A state of emergency has been declared in Flint, Michigan due to elevated levels of lead in the drinking water. This event followed the budget-motivated decision to switch the water supply to the toxic Flint River. We urge you to stand with the residents of Flint and prosecute those involved in the decision to poison an entire community.
Children in Flint have stopped growing. They have displayed increased antisocial behavior, shortened attention spans, and difficulty concentrating. This is in addition to the rash, hair loss, and other physical effects caused by lead poisoning. These effects are irreversible and will plague these children over the course of their lives.
The decisions that led to the poisoning of nearly 100,000 residents must not go unpunished. We demand that an investigation be initiated and that those involved in this man-made health crisis be held accountable.
