Release Human Rights Lawyer Beaten While Giving Peaceful Workshop

Target: General Tran Dai Quang, Minister of Public Security, Vietnam

Goal: Release human rights lawyer who was beaten while giving a peaceful workshop and arrested 10 days later.

Human rights lawyer Nguyen Van Dai has been arrested by Vietnamese authorities and is currently being held in detention. According to Amnesty International’s Champa Patel, Dai is a “brave and passionate activist who has been raising awareness domestically and internationally about human rights violations in a country that tolerates no dissent.” Dai’s arrest comes 10 days after he was beaten by 20 plain-clothed men while delivering a peaceful workshop on human rights. He has been a prisoner of conscience before.

According to Amnesty International, Vietnam periodically acts out against those who speak up to raise awareness of the country’s acts against human rights and zero tolerance of dissent. The organization fears that Dai’s arrest is a precursor to more abuse toward those peacefully seeking to raise awareness of Vietnam’s human oppression. We must act now and demand that the Minister of Public Safety release Nguyen Van Dai.

Dear General Tran Dai Quang,

I am writing to implore upon you the necessity to release human rights lawyer Nguyen Van Dai. Amnesty International and the United Nations have expressed concern over Vietnam’s human rights violations, and this arrest is the latest in a string of events that strongly suggest your country is indeed committing acts against the understood and accepted international rights of humans.

No one should be arrested for conducting peaceful workshops and demonstrations educating people about their own inalienable rights. Release Dai immediately. Your lack of commitment to and continued violations of human rights do not go unnoticed.
