Save Wolverines from Extinction

Target: Bob Broscheid, Director, Colorado Parks And Wildlife

Goal: Reintroduce wolverines to the Colorado ecosystem to save them from extinction.

Wolverines are nearly extinct in America, with fewer than 300 remaining on the continental United States. Hunting, climate change, and warmer temperatures have decimated the population, but one refuge still remains: Colorado. Unlike many other states in the wolverine’s range that have been affected, Colorado is expected to retain the majority of its winter snowpack, which is essential to the wolverine’s survival. Reintroducing wolverines would have tangible benefits for both the species and the ecosystem. It is not too late to save this valuable species, but swift action must be taken.

Colorado, once a haven for wolverines, is now all but devoid of the creatures. The state is home to only one known wolverine, named M56, but its radio collar hasn’t emitted a signal for over three years. The three-year gap is extremely discouraging. A recent proposal was set to provide protection for the remaining wolverines, but a decision last year by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reversed the ruling and abandoned the species.

According to director Dan Ashe, the reversal occurred because the organization “kn[e]w too little about the ecology of wolverines” and couldn’t make “a reasonable prediction that wolverines will likely be endangered in the immediate future.” But Ashe’s decision has been denounced by wolverine supporters who feel that the animal needs all the help it can get.

Center for Biological Diversity endangered species director Noah Greenwald said, “The agency went against its own biologists.” Tim Preso, an attorney for Earthjustice, added “They’re insisting on a level of certainty that won’t exist until wolverines are extinct.” Wolverines are notoriously difficult to monitor because of their solitary nature and wide territory range. They can travel up to 15 miles a day, making it extremely difficult to accurately gauge their population numbers. Despite this, research has consistently shown that the population is declining.

These animals need help, and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife service is in a prime position to assist them. By reintroducing wolverines to Colorado, Colorado Park and Wildlife can help ensure that this precious species does not die off. Urge officials to create a plan to reintroduce and save wolverines.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Broscheid,

Wolverines are nearly extinct in America, with fewer than 300 remaining on the continent. Hunting, climate change, and warmer temperatures have decimated the population, but one refuge still remains: Colorado. Unlike many other states in the wolverine’s range that have been affected, your state is expected to retain the majority of its winter snowpack, which is essential to the wolverine’s survival. I urge you to please consider reintroducing this species into your state so that it is not lost to extinction.

Wolverines are notoriously difficult to monitor because of their solitary nature and wide territory range. Despite this, research has consistently shown that the population is declining and these animals need help. Your organization is in a prime position to assist them. Reintroducing wolverines would have tangible benefits for both the species and the ecosystem. This species is too precious to lose to extinction, and we cannot let them die off.

Sincerely,
