Target: John Kasich, Governor of Ohio
Goal: Throw out bill requiring women who had abortions or miscarriages to provide burial services to fetuses.
Pregnant women who have an abortion or a miscarriage may soon be required to pay for the cremation or burial of fetal remains, should a bill proposed by Ohio State Representative Kyle Koehler be passed into law. The bill would require hospitals or clinics to humanely dispose of the remains and pass the cost along to the woman, who will be required to sign a form that works out the specifics of the burial, such as the cemetery where the remains will be kept. Failure to adhere to the proposed law would result in a misdemeanor charge and up to 180 days in jail.
While supporters of the bill claim that it is not politically motivated, the proposition follows a national backlash against Planned Parenthood after a viral video made false claims that the organization was profiting from the sale of fetal body parts. If passed into law, the forced cremation or burial of fetal tissue would increase the cost of an abortion, which is already quite expensive for most Americans, thereby further decreasing the procedure’s accessibility. For women who miscarry, it will add ridiculous and unnecessary stress to an already traumatic time.
For over 40 years, Ohio clinics and hospitals have disposed of fetal tissue with similar medical waste and, only after the political attacks on Planned Parenthood failed, are politicians considering these regulations. This clear attack on women’s reproductive rights is shocking and sickening and must be halted immediately. Sign the petition below to demand that Governor John Kasich vetoes any attempts to pass the proposed laws.
Dear Governor John Kasich,
Women who have abortions or miscarriages could soon be required to provide and pay for burial or cremation services for their unborn fetuses. This proposition, which supporters claim is not politically motivated, follows a national scandal where an anti-abortion group made false claims that Planned Parenthood was selling fetal tissue for profit.
Not only would this law increase the costs of abortions, which many Americans already struggle to afford, but will add extra stress and shame to women who have suffered miscarriages. This bill is a poorly thought out and thinly veiled attack on women’s rights. We, the undersigned, demand that you do everything in your power to ensure that these proposed bills do not become law.
