Target: Jerry Jacobs Jr., Delaware North Co.’s CEO
Goal: Deny corporate claims to beloved Yosemite National Park’s attraction names.
Names of the Yosemite National Park attractions may have to be changed because Delaware North Co. has sneakily bought their trademarks. In other words, a corporation with a lot of money just bought the rights to the names of areas in Yosemite. Delaware North Co. is asking to be compensated $51 million for the park to use its own names.
Corporations do this to be able to receive “compensation” from the park for the right to use even the most beloved and long-standing names. In fact, Yosemite’s attractions have had their names for 125 years before Delaware North applied for the rights and trademarks to the names. They claim to have the rights for historic and treasured attractions’ names like Yosemite Lodge, Wawona Hotel, and Badger Pass Ski Area. Until Yosemite is able to negotiate for their rights to their own names, they will have to use generic ones like Big Trees Lodge and Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area.
Hopefully, the name changes will be temporary if we are able to stop money-hungry corporations like Delaware North Co. from claiming history and tradition for profit. Deny Delaware North Co.’s claims to the century-old and cherished Yosemite Park attraction names.
Dear Mr. Jacobs,
Delaware North Co. has dishonestly bought the rights to Yosemite’s most loved attraction names. It is my belief that your corporation does not have any claims to the historic Yosemite names. Trying to receive a compensation for historic attractions demonstrates a lack of community values within your corporation that I will not tolerate.
Simply because obtaining the rights to an unregistered name is easy does not mean that it is the right thing to do. The names currently in use in Yosemite have been established for over 100 years and are cherished by the attraction’s visitors from around the world.
The rights purchased for the titles of Yosemite attractions hold no ground in my opinion; no compensation should be rewarded to a company that is only at a loss of ethics. I deny Delaware North Co.’s claims to the century-old and cherished Yosemite Park attraction names and their claims to compensation. I urge you to stop trying to profit from these names that have been used for years.
