Don’t Kill Shelter Dogs Without Letting Them Be Adopted

Target: Bill Funderburk, Hamilton, TX City Manager

Goal: Stop killing animal shelter dogs without notifying people who could’ve saved the dogs’ lives.

Instead of making an attempt to find homes for the dogs in the city animal shelter, a city manager reportedly decided to force the shelter to kill them all, even though the shelter reportedly still had four more kennels empty. He allegedly justified his decision by saying that although they were healthy, it was cruel to keep them in cages. The city ordinance allows the animals to be killed after only five days of being placed there.

When asked if he tried contacting any volunteers to let them know his decision and to give the dogs a chance to be rescued, he reportedly said they hardly have any volunteers. One person reportedly stated that she had been saving up money to get her dog out of the shelter, but she wasn’t even informed and now the dog has been killed.

It would appear the city manager didn’t make any attempts to find options for the dogs. Had he done a proper job and notified people, the rescue groups and volunteers could’ve worked to save these four lives. Demand the city manager start making efforts to adopt the shelter animals (through notifying the volunteers, rescue groups, and other community members) before ever making a decision to kill the animals at his and only his discretion.

Dear Mr. Funderburk,

It was brought to our attention that you allegedly had all the animal shelter dogs killed, even though there reportedly was sufficient kennel space left. We’re appalled that you didn’t bother notifying anyone, not even volunteers before allegedly deciding to kill the dogs at your own discretion.

These dogs could’ve been adopted had you bothered to do as little as just notify volunteers. In the age of social media, there’s no excuse for this. We demand you never decide to kill the shelter animals until you’ve exhausted every option by reaching out to volunteers, rescue groups, and other community members to allow these dogs a chance at life first.
