Target: Frank G. Lasee, Wisconsin Senator
Goal: Don’t shrink protection for bodies of water to benefit development projects.
Surface waters, such as rivers and coastal wetlands, could be in jeopardy due to a bill that seeks to reduce protection for water bodies that are currently designated as a ‘natural resource interest.’ The bill is to facilitate development on bodies of water, which could negatively impact these water systems. We must take action now to stop this bill from passing so that we can protect our precious natural resources from damaging development projects.
Republican lawmakers in the state of Wisconsin have proposed this bill that will reduce special designation for water bodies in the state. Currently, trout streams, waters that contain endangered or threatened species, scenic rivers, some coastal wetlands, and wild rice waters are designated as crucial resource waters and protected from development.
However, the law would reduce protections for these bodies of water by only issuing protection and special designation for only portions of these streams, rivers, wild rice waters, and coastal wetlands. By reducing the amount of special designations, development projects can more easily be approved on these natural waterways.
Development on these types of water bodies can be extremely destructive. Construction increases sediment in streams and rivers, impacting wildlife habitat and water quality. Increased human activity near these natural waterways also causes more trash to pollute these precious rivers, streams, and wetlands. Development upstream could negativly impact water quality, wildlife habitat, and the path of the stream channel downstream.
By signing this petition, you are urging Wisconsin Senator, Frank Lasee, to revoke his support for this bill that could potentially destroy Wisconsin’s precious waterways.
Dear Senator Lasee,
Wisconsin has numerous natural waterways that are currently protected from development by a special natural resource designation. Your proposed bill wants to limit these protections for the sake of development. I want you to revoke your support for this bill that, if approved, will have negative environmental impacts on Wisconin’s surface water.
Development on portions of these rivers, streams, wetlands, and rice waters will not just impact the surrounding area but also the health of these bodies of water downstream. An increase in sediment will reduce water quality and destroy aquatic wildlife and their habitat. Pollution is inevitable from increased human interference with these waterways.
I urge you to please consider Wisconsin’s already suffering water systems. Please stop this bill from destroying the state’s natural water sources.
