Target: Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane
Goal: Applaud lawsuit seeking restitution for thousands of people allegedly defrauded by a major fracking corporation.
A fracking company may have to pay millions to citizens of rural Pennsylvania for cheating them out of promised royalties involved in lease negotiations. The Attorney General of the state is representing over 4,000 individuals who were allegedly defrauded by the Chesapeake Energy Corporation and associated companies who have been using the dangerous and environmentally unsound practice of fracking to extract natural gas in the countryside.
The plaintiffs in this case allege that the corporation offered the people living in rural Pennsylvania royalties in exchange for leasing the land to the company for fracking. However, even though the terms of the contract specifically prohibited deductions from these royalties, Chesapeake Energy deducted the costs of transportation and refining the gas from their payments to the landowners, essentially cheating them out of millions.
It’s bad enough that fracking companies are exploiting the land and polluting the environment and water supply for the sake of massive profits. They’re allegedly even cheating people out of the money they promised them to devastate their lands with fracking chemicals. How much money does one company need? Sign our petition to support Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane for standing up to Chesapeake Energy and supporting the people of Pennsylvania.
Dear Attorney General Kane,
I wanted to commend you for your efforts in supporting over 4,000 Pennsylvanians who were allegedly defrauded by fracking companies that promised them royalties in exchange for being able to lease the land for natural gas extraction. As you likely already know, fracking is a highly destructive process that has been linked to dangerous water pollution and environmental devastation.
Because of the destruction brought on by fracking, the least that the Chesapeake Energy Corporation could do is to give the people who own the land extra money to make up for the harm done to the land and water. Instead, they may have cheated these people out of millions to boost already obscene profits. This kind of behavior is absolutely unacceptable, but thanks to you, they may actually have to pay for their alleged crimes.
It’s hard for the common people to fight against huge corporations like Chesapeake Energy, seeing as corporations can afford highly paid lawyers that the average individual could never pay for. Thanks to people like you, the rural landowners of Pennsylvania have a fighting chance against those who would try to cheat and exploit them. We applaud you for all that you’ve done.
