Target: Barack Obama, President of the United States
Goal: Veto proposed rider bill lifting logging restrictions in national forests.
Loggers could soon be clear-cutting through our national forests if a potentially disastrous logging bill that would be attached as a “rider” to the Omnibus Appropriations Act passes. If passed, the rider would suspend environmental protections, allowing commercial logging projects to work in national forests and other federal forest lands. These logging projects would devastate the environment and ruin America’s pristine forests, and President Obama must step in and prevent the passage of this bill.
The logging rider claims to be a protective measure, as the Republicans pushing for its approval say that clear-cutting areas will help manage forest fires. This is simply not true. Research has repeatedly shown that previous fires, not thinning, help temper fire intensity and prevent the further spread of flames. Increased logging does not make forests burn less and has actually increased blaze intensity in some cases.
As world leaders meet in Paris to discuss climate change, the logging bill is an excellent opportunity to examine the type of misinformed and greedy policies that have so greatly harmed our planet. Logging on our public lands would significantly reduce carbon storage in our forests, creating yet another environmental crisis.
America’s national forests are protected land and should remain that way. The motivations for this proposed rider bill are entirely financial, and the ramifications could be catastrophic for the ever-diminishing natural landscapes in our country. Sign the petition below and urge President Obama to prevent this legislation from further destroying the environment.
Dear President Obama,
As the new appropriations act nears completion, several politicians are attempting to include a rider bill that would allow logging in national forests and other federal forest lands. These logging projects claim to be a protective measure against forest fires, but research has repeatedly shown that thinner forests do little to stop the spread of fire.
If passed, this bill would devastate an environment that is already ailing. Climate change is a very real problem, and America has a responsibility to be a leader in the movement to clean up our planet. I urge you to strike down this rider bill so that our national forests can remain protected from greedy industries.
