Target: California Governor Jerry Brown
Goal: Put a stop to a methane gas leak that went on for a month before local authorities even began to evacuate citizens.
Methane gas has been leaking from a gas company’s storage facility for over a month, making people sick and threatening the global climate. Methane gas is dangerous to humans and animals and is one of the worst greenhouse gases in existence. Despite this, it took an entire month for authorities to even begin evacuating people from the area where hundreds of individuals have reported bad odors and health problems.
The gas leaking out of the SoCalGas Company’s tanks is equivalent to 25 percent of the entire state’s methane emissions. That’s a huge amount of methane considering how large and heavily populated the state is. Yet instead of immediately acting to get this leak stopped, Governor Jerry Brown was preparing to run off to the Paris climate talks where he’s currently boasting about being a leader on the issue. Meanwhile, this one source in his state is leaking enough to threaten the health of hundreds of people in the area.
This should have been considered a public health emergency. If Governor Brown really wants to be a leader in environmentalism and if he cares about his citizens, he needs to stop talking and start acting. Sign our petition to demand that Governor Brown get back to California and immediately address the health and climate crisis happening now.
Dear Governor Brown,
You should be aware that there is currently a public health and climate emergency happening in your state in the Los Angeles area. A methane leak has been spewing forth for over a month, causing bad smells and hundreds of reports of health problems linked to the gas. It took local authorities an entire month to even begin evacuating people near the methane gas storage facility, and thousands are still at risk.
You’re currently in Paris claiming that you’re a leader in fighting climate change. Meanwhile, this leak has already put out the equivalent of a quarter of your state’s methane from standard sources. This is unacceptable. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas responsible for much of the planet’s warming that is threatening the entire human race. How this leak was allowed to go on for so long without action from yourself is inconceivable.
It’s time to prove that you’re not all talk when it comes to climate issues and environmentalism. At the very least, you need to be concerned about the health of the thousands of people still living near this leaking methane storage tank. Do your job and immediately act to get this leak stopped and evacuate everyone within range of the gas, even if that means leaving Paris early.
