Target: Freddy Drennan, Mayor of Slidell, Louisiana
Goal: Launch investigation into a school’s alleged mishandling of sexual abuse reports against a girl’s basketball coach.
A group of high school girls were kicked off the basketball team after reporting their coach for inappropriate touching and for hanging around the girl’s locker room while they were changing. Seven girls made the same allegations, but their school failed to do anything to look into the issue and instead deprived the students of the sport they love. Recently, the school allegedly fired the assistant coach for trying to protect the girls.
The girls had refused to play a basketball game after their principal ignored their request to talk with him about the problems they were having with the coach. The next day, all seven of them were informed that they had been kicked off of the team and were told not to ask questions about the decision.
This is the opposite of how allegations of sexual abuse should be handled. There have been famous cases of similar accusations of this kind of terrible crime being ignored and covered up, and the result was widespread trauma for dozens of children. Schools need to do everything in their power to protect their students from this gross violence, and that means taking every report seriously.
It seems like this school’s principal has something to hide. The city needs to step up and appoint an independent investigator into the allegations of sexual abuse and the mishandling of the situation by the school administration. If it’s found that sexual abuse did take place, the coach and the principal need to be immediately removed and the girls need to be placed back onto the basketball team. Sign to demand a proper investigation into this issue.
Dear Mayor Drennan,
Seven girls from Salmen High School in your city have accused the school’s basketball coach of sexual misconduct, including inappropriate touching and having to be asked multiple times to leave the girl’s locker room while his players were changing. Instead of listening to the girls and taking the allegations seriously, the principal ignored their requests to speak with him and had them kicked off the team when they refused to play in protest.
Sexual abuse charges are incredibly serious. If they are true, this coach will continue to abuse underage girls for as long as he can get away with it, causing trauma and life-long struggles. If the principal will not make an effort to protect his students, then you need to step in immediately. An independent investigator must be assigned to look into the allegations, and in the meantime, this coach needs to be removed from the school.
Even if the allegations are not true, the school principal did not handle the situation appropriately. We demand that he be removed and the girls be placed back onto the basketball team while an independent investigation is happening. Please do everything in your power to do justice for these girls and protect all other students from sexual abuse.
