Target: German Chancellor Angela Merkel
Goal: Stop racist hate crimes against refugees fleeing to Germany by increasing funding and security at refugee centers.
Refugee shelters in Germany have been facing an increased rate of hate crimes like arson attacks, swastikas sprayed on walls, property damage, assaults and attempted murder. These crimes come as Germany has taken in a record number of refugees fleeing violence in their home countries, the majority from Syria.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel claimed that the perpetrators of these crimes would be punished with the full force of the law, yet a survey conducted by news weekly Die Zeit reported that only four cases have resulted in convictions out of the 222 most serious attacks on shelters reported so far this year.
Die Zeit said the reasons for these numbers are lack of resources for investigations as well as a lack of evidence for cases because many of the refugee shelters are in areas with small populations.
Something must be done to put an end to these crimes before they get truly out of control. Urge officials to increase funding for investigations into these crimes and to increase security at refugee centers to stop criminals before they even have a chance to commit a hate crime.
Dear Chancellor Merkel,
Arson attacks, swastikas sprayed on walls, property damage, assaults and attempted murder have become more and more common at refugee centers filled with mostly Syrian refugees who are attempting to escape violence in their home countries. It’s amazing that Germany is taking in record numbers of refugees, but these people should not be forced to flee violence only to be met with more violence like these hate crimes.
You say you’ve committed to using the full force of the law with these criminals, but numbers show a different story. I urge you to increase funding for investigations into these crimes and to increase security at refugee centers to stop criminals before they even have a chance to commit a hate crime.
