Target: Missouri Rep. Stacey Newman
Goal: Praise attempt to force lawmakers to either pass restrictions on gun purchases or end restrictions on abortion access.
A legislator is making a point about the fact that it’s easier to get a gun than an abortion in Missouri by introducing a bill that would force people to wait 72 hours before being able to purchase a firearm, among other restrictions. In Missouri, there’s a 72-hour waiting period for any person who wants to get an abortion. Rep. Stacey Newman thinks that guns should be treated as a public health issue, so anyone who wants to buy one should also have to spend three days thinking about it.
“If we truly insist that Missouri cares about ‘all life,’ then we must take immediate steps to address our major cities’ rising rates of gun violence,” said Newman. Conservatives often tout the “sanctity of life” when talking about reproductive choice, but seem to forget about this idea when the issue of gun control comes up. This bill cleverly points out the hypocrisy of caring more about the health and safety of an embryo or fetus than that of every fully developed and born person in the U.S.
This bill would also force every person who wants to purchase a gun to speak with a doctor about the health risks of gun ownership and tour a hospital trauma center so that they can observe the consequences of gun violence. People will also have to travel at least 120 miles to legally obtain a firearm.
Whether or not this bill is passed, it makes an important point about the disconnect in the supposed morals touted by U.S. conservatives. Sign to praise this clever call-out bill crafted and put forward by Rep. Newman.
Dear Ms. Newman,
I understand that you recently introduced a bill that would implement the same kind of restrictions on access to firearms that are currently in place for access to abortions in the state of Missouri. I want to thank you for your dedication to both gun safety and to reproductive rights. This bill sends a clear message about the hypocrisy of forcing people to travel long distances and wait three days to get an abortion when they don’t have to do the same for a gun.
As restrictions on abortions keep getting tighter and those for gun purchases keep getting looser, more and more people are dying from mass shootings as well as pregnancy complications and injury from attempted self-abortions. This makes the entire “pro-life” position of the conservative politicians who agree with these policies not only nonsensical, but extremely dangerous.
The U.S. needs more legislators like you who aren’t afraid to stand up to deadly hypocrisy. Thank you again for taking the time to bring people’s attention to these public health issues and discrepancies in personal rights.
