Save Dolphins from Proposed Entertainment Complex

Target: Da Nang Department of Planning and Investment Director Huynh Duc

Goal: Prevent construction of entertainment facility that plans to use wild-caught dolphins.

Recently, plans were approved to build a complex that includes an arena in which wild-caught dolphins, seals, and sea lions will perform. The proposed entertainment center, to be erected in the city of Da Nang, Vietnam, would confine these animals in small, cramped spaces and deny them the right to a natural life. Vietnam has worked hard to establish a reputation as an eco-friendly nation, but this “abusement park” would represent a major step backward.

In recent years, Da Nang has become a popular tourist destination. The city takes pride prides in its environmental awareness, as it has shown no reluctance in refusing to take on projects that would harm the local environment. This makes the decision to approve the new entertainment complex extremely surprising. Using dolphins and other species as a means of amusement is seen as archaic, and such a progressive city should not be encouraging the practice.

Dolphins in captivity lead depressing and unhealthy lives. In the wild, they can cover several miles every day as they journey through complex and ever-changing environments, and they are accustomed to environments full of ever-changing sounds and stimuli. Keeping dolphins in small pools and tanks prevents them from enjoying the life they want to live.

As evidenced by the massive decline in ticket sales and stock prices at SeaWorld, public sentiment is rapidly shifting away from the idea of using wild animals as entertainment. Scientists, conservationists, and the general public are starting to agree that keeping these animals in captivity is harmful to their well-being.

Sign the petition below to tell Director Huynh Duc that the proposed park in Da Nang must not be built, as the dolphins and other animals that will be detained there will lose their right to a satisfying life.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Duc,

The proposed entertainment center in Da Nang would confine dolphins, seals, and sea lions in small, cramped spaces and deny them the right to a natural life. Vietnam has worked hard and enacted several progressive measures, establishing a reputation as an eco-friendly nation. However, this “abusement park” would represent a major step backward for the country.

Dolphins in captivity lead depressing and unhealthy lives, and keeping them in small pools and tanks prevents them from enjoying the life they want to live. As evidenced by the massive decline in ticket sales and stock prices at SeaWorld, public sentiment is rapidly shifting away from the idea of using wild animals as entertainment. I urge you to strengthen your country’s environmental reputation and scrap the plans to build this entertainment complex.

Sincerely,
