Investigate Police Shooting of Non-Threatening Man

Target: San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee

Goal: Launch an investigation into the filmed police killing of a black man who appeared to be entirely non-threatening.

San Francisco police were caught on video pumping bullets into a black man who was walking slowly down the sidewalk with his arms at his sides. In the report, the police said that the man “charged” at an officer, but the video clearly shows that this was a lie. This incident needs to be investigated by an impartial, outside source so that the cops who killed this man can be held accountable for their actions.

In the video taken by a nearby citizen, you can see a man surrounded by a crowd of police, all with weapons drawn. There appears to be an argument, then the man starts walking slowly down the sidewalk with his arms hanging down at his sides. As he approaches one officer who was blocking his path, a shot is fired, followed by many other gunshots and screaming.

This is another in a long list of seemingly unnecessary killings of black individuals by police. At the very least, the video is evidence that these officers were dishonest about what happened, and that means an investigation is necessary. Because U.S. police departments have a history of covering up for their own officers, we must insist that this is done by an independent source. Sign to demand that this killing is fairly investigated so that justice may be done.

Dear Mr. Lee,

Recently, an unidentified man was shot down by San Francisco police, who claimed that he had charged officers and they had feared for their lives. However, a video taken by a citizen shows that the man did not charge before the officers opened fire. In fact, he was walking slowly with his arms down at his side. Instead of using any number of non-lethal methods to apprehend him, the entire crowd of officers appears to fire dozens of shots, killing him at the scene.

Not only did officers use likely unnecessary force that resulted in the death of a man who did not appear threatening at all, they lied about the man’s actions prior to the shooting. This breach of police integrity warrants an immediate investigation into the incident. Furthermore, due to the national history of police botching investigations of their own departments to cover for officers, the investigation needs to be conducted by an independent, non-police source.

San Francisco does not need to be another city that fails its citizens by refusing to do justice for those who are harmed or killed by police. It’s clear that this is a case of misconduct, and we demand that you ensure the incident is properly investigated so that this man’s family can find peace.

The more we see these scumbags who somehow get to be “police” murdering innocent people, the worse is the public reaction, and the harder it becomes for decent police to do their job, or even to keep from getting murdered themselves when not expecting it. We need to get police departments, and those above them, to stop defending and covering up these murderers.
