Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Investigate CIA torture program and punish those responsible.
Following the attacks on September 11th, the CIA conducted a torture program that allegedly carried out crueler torture techniques than initially presumed. The state-sanctioned, CIA-operated program had abducted numerous people around the world and tortured them in secret detention. Though the operation lasted for only eight years (from 2001-2009), some of the crimes committed in that time span were allegedly hidden from public.
According to an article by Human Rights Watch (HRW), “many detainees were held by the CIA in pitch-dark windowless cells, chained to walls, naked or diapered.” Some individuals were positioned in a way that made it impossible to sleep for days. There were reports of hallucinations from the lack of sleep, and some even asked to be killed.
Another report, released in December of 2014, revealed that at least five detainees were subjected to “rectal feeding.” In one case, a detainee was “fed” pureed food into his rectum through a medical tube without proof of medical necessity, according to HRW. Other situations where detainees were waterboarded or forced to stand for days while having broken bones in the legs or feet were also mentioned in the report.
The Obama administration claimed they have investigated the CIA torture program, with Assistant US Attorney John Durham. Durham, however, closed the investigation on August 30, 2012 without pressing any criminal charges. It is clear that the alleged methods of torture in the CIA’s program were extreme and unjust, and the individuals that contributed to the program should be investigated and punished accordingly.
Dear President Obama,
It has been established that the CIA tortures following September 11th allowed for crueler punishments than initially expected. Interviews with a number of detainees have revealed that the program carried out cruel and unusual methods of torture, including rectal feeding, having detainees stand for days with broken bones in legs or feet, and waterboarding.
We ask that the full CIA reports are released to the public so an independent attorney can impartially judge and punish those who carried out the excessive tortures. Find justice for the detainees who were tortured unfairly.
