Target: David Cameron, Prime Minister of the UK
Goal: Save the endangered hedgehog from garden nets and climate change.
Hedgehogs are dying in the U.K. Changing weather patterns and human interference are jeopardizing their ability to thrive. Urge the Prime Minister to increase awareness of this problem and protect this magnificent species.
Hedgehogs have thrived in the U.K. for nearly a century. In the 1950s, approximately 30 million hedgehogs lived in the area. Today that number is closer to one million. Experts claim that the recent change in weather patterns has affected the hedgehog’s hibernation habits. With the onset of winter approaching, it is more important than ever to take the hedgehog’s welfare into consideration.
Babies born at this time will be too small to survive on their own. The local wildlife center estimates that nearly 200 underweight hedgehogs will come through its doors before winter ends. In addition, chain link fences and garden goal nets work as traps. The hedgehogs cannot fit through the small holes and die.
If action isn’t taken soon, the hedgehog will be extinct within 10 years. Urge Prime Minster Cameron to create public awareness of this growing problem and work with environmentalists to save this cherished species.
Dear Prime Minster Cameron,
The hedgehog has been a cherished species in the U.K. for nearly a century. Now, due to human and climate interference, it faces extinction. We urge you to collaborate with environmentalists as well as the public in creating a safe environment for the hedgehog to thrive.
At one time, 30 million hedgehogs lived in the U.K. Today, that number has fallen to nearly a million. While changing weather patterns play a role, human interference is also a problem. Garden nets and chain link fences are a growing concern for the hedgehog. The small spaces between the nets work as traps and catch the hedgehogs as they are passing through. Unable to free themselves, the hedgehogs die.
We propose that increasing public awareness of the dangers of these nets will result in their removal or modification. The simple act of cutting a larger hole in the nets could save hundreds of hedgehogs from certain death.
We urge you to create national awareness of the hedgehog’s endangered status. Environmentalists are hard at work to save this dying species and your support will make all the difference.
