Bears Chained and Attacked by Dogs for ‘Sport’ Must be Protected

Target: Director Alvin A. Taylor, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources

Goal: End cruel and inhumane bear baiting operations in South Carolina.

Bears are being inhumanely used for the blood sport of bear baiting. Confined, chained, and unable to defend themselves, the bears fend off up to 300 trained dogs as entertainment. Countries such as Russia, Pakistan, and even Canada call this entertainment. Unfortunately, bear baiting is also legal in the state of South Carolina.

Bears are captured for the competition and forced to endure immense pain before the fighting begins. Their teeth are broken, noses are pierced with nose rings, and they are declawed. Large groups gather to watch dogs torment the bears, sometimes to the death. The events are sponsored by breed clubs, such as the American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club. These events are described by the sponsors as a training event for hunting dogs. This event is a sadistic spectator “sport” for those who enjoy watching a dog attack a bear.

Black bears are shy animals who usually avoid humans. A male black bear can have a home range of nearly 200 miles and weigh up to 800 pounds. South Carolina law only requires that a bear’s enclosure be 84 square feet in size – an inadequate prison for such a large animal.

Public bear baiting competitions are held in Spartanburg, Hickory Grove, and Travelers Rest, South Carolina. The dogs are only supposed to intimidate and bay at the bear and keep the bear in its place. In actuality, the dogs harass the bear by jumping on and biting the bear. Additionally, the bears are subjected to barking and biting dogs for hours on end without access to food or water.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) has issued permits for 26 captive bears. The majority of these bears are used in bear baiting competitions. The SCDNR does not inspect the competitions and has turned a blind eye to the fates of these tortured bears. South Carolina’s animal protection laws are weak and insufficient. The SCDNR should enforce the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to protect these mistreated bears. The AWA “requires that minimum standards of care and treatment be provided for certain animals bred for commercial sale, used in research, transported commercially, or exhibited to the public.” These bears are certainly not being provided even the minimum standards of care. They are exploited, attacked, tortured, and sometimes killed for the sake of a blood sport competition.

By signing this petition, you will urge Director of the SCDNR to prohibit both public and private bear baiting competitions. The competitions are torturous, cruel, and inhumane.

Dear Director Taylor,

South Carolina is the only state that allows the blood sport of bear baiting. These competitions are barbaric and inhumane and cause grievous harm to the bears. Surely, there are more humane ways that hunting dogs can be trained rather than torturing black bears that have had their teeth broken and claws either filed or removed.

The bears are subjected to harassment and aggressive attacks by up to 300 dogs over the course of each event. They are denied food and water and chained in a corner. Their “habitats” are no better, forced to live in an 84 square foot, solitary enclosure.

We, the undersigned, urge you to enforce the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and shut down these cruel and sadistic events. No animal deserves to be degraded and defiled like the bears in these “sporting” competitions. Please protect these black bears and save them from a life of torment in South Carolina.

This is just beyond belief and it’s actually LEGAL in an American state????? What kind of barbarians live in South Carolina????

  2. ban all bear baiting now.and the people using the bears for this.

  3. Karen Eicholtz says:

Mr. Taylor is director of South Carolina Department of Natural Resources which is issuing permits for people to keep black bears. Petitioning this guy is a waste of time; he’s aware how these bears are being used.
South Carolina apparently doesn’t belong to the USA or in this respect doesn’t deserve to be part of a country whose other states do not allow this disgusting activity. It’s time to get up to speed with the rest of the country. Abandon bear baiting. Just because something has been done in the past doesn’t mean you keep doing it. There are other ways to train hunting dogs. Doing this is some kind of fun for people who have no conscience. Allowing dogs to attack a bear whose defenses have been removed is truly unconscionable. What kind of individual(s) conduct this? The same kind who run dog fights one would presume and we all know what those people are like.

  4. I can’t believe bear baiting is still allowed anywhere in the United States. South Carolina have you no shame? This is animal cruelty at its worst. End this barbaric practice now!!!

  5. Debra Diana says:

Are you kidding me?? This is the devils work and everyone who participates in this cruel and inhumane activity works for him. Karma will come back to haunt them.

    This is so heartbreaking !!!!

  6. Tina shurtleff says:

This is one of the most lazy disgusting “sports” out there. What ever happened to giving an animal a fair chance. Shame on them.

  7. Unbelievable. There are some wicked cruel bastards in this world.

  8. David Lavery says:

The evil fellers who do these things should be given a death sentence, they have no humanity , they are not fit to be classed as human, animals deserve some rights and a lot of protection from cruel humans. Tormenting animals isn’t a sport and shouldn’t be referred to as being sport, it isn’t its deliberate sadism from idiots who have the mentality of school bullies. Its disgusting that those in Authority do little or nothing to prevent this.

  9. Wendy Morrison says:

This is very CRUEL to these bears! BEARS should NOT be ever used as BAIT for any sport which is constant ANIMAL ABUSE AND CRUELTY!!!!
This “sport” which I use this term lightly here should be STOPPED IMMEDIATELY! Anyone who participates chaining the bear, breaking this bears teeth, piercing his nose, and declaring a bear needs to have the same things done to them, and throw all these people whom participates in any way into a ring with this pack of dogs! Then these idiots live throw them into a prison cell for the rest of their lives!!!!

  10. We are the animals! We are monsters out of control and those that have no love for animals are those that cannot love themselves. They are living excrement with a putrid, rotting heart!

  12. “So many people insist they are against animal abuse, cruelty, suffering and the inhumane treatment of animals, yet they don’t understand they are actively engaging in and supporting egregious suffering, abuse, cruelty and inhumane treatment when they eat animals and their ‘by-products.’ If you are against cruelty, suffering and inhumane treatment, then you go vegan. It’s just that simple.” – Sarah Kiser

  13. sadists

  14. Is there an event more sadistically cruel & unconscionable? — I think NOT! —-

    Where’s the rationality? — Where’s the compassion? —

    WHO’s in charge here? —

I fear those who are insane and hateful are ruling the roost here AND we cannot — must NOT — have this!

  15. this cruelty has to stop. There is no need for this sadistic behavior from cruel humans that have no respect for animals. There needs to be strict laws made
and enforced. Anyone caught doing this needs to be done the same way.
arrest these idiots and then rub bacon grease or any strong food smell on
them and then tie them to a tree and let the bears attack them.
