Demand Ford Stop Funding Deceptive Corporate Interest Group

money in hand

Target: Ford CEO Mark Fields

Goal: Discontinue Ford’s membership with notorious corporate bill mill.

Ford Motor Company is one of hundreds of corporations that give money each year to a notorious corporate interest group. The conservative organization has a far reach that works to influence almost every mainstream legislative issue. Its demonstrated goals include busting unions, contributing to climate change denial, deregulating big business, and blocking healthcare reform, just to name a few.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is known as a “corporate bill mill”. It is not just an industry front group or lobby but an actual membership association of conservative state legislators. Despite this, almost 98 percent of ALEC’s revenue still comes from corporations, trade associations, and corporate “foundations.” ALEC uses this funding to draft bills that benefit its corporate donors and to persuade its congressional members to make sure these bills become laws. Organizations like ALEC threaten democracy at its very core by putting a disturbing amount of legislative power in the hands of corporations.

In recent years, several large, influential companies such as Google, Facebook, and Coca-Cola have chosen to discontinue their memberships with ALEC. The companies have cited the organization’s backwards stances on issues like net neutrality and its continued propagation of climate denial as prime reasons for leaving. However, Ford, a company that supposedly prides itself on advancements in sustainability and emission reductions, maintains its ALEC membership.

Ford’s own website states the company has “comprehensive strategies and goals for minimizing our environmental impacts, including reducing our contribution to climate change.” Despite this, Ford continues to take part in shady operations targeted at undermining climate science and environmental regulations. Urge the CEO of Ford to stop the hypocrisy and make a real commitment to the environment by halting funding for ALEC immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Fields,

I am very disappointed in Ford’s choice to contribute to the shady conservative bill mill know as ALEC. Corporate funding, such as that coming from Ford, allows ALEC to doctor and push legislation that erodes progress such as environmental regulation and health care reform. Most notably, ALEC has been shown to contribute fervently to climate change denial. I find it disturbing that a company supposedly committed to sustainability initiatives would support such a backwards agenda.

Ford’s own website states, “we have comprehensive strategies and goals for minimizing our environmental impacts, including reducing our contribution to climate change.” Evidently, Ford wants to combat climate change while ALEC attempts to deny its very existence. It is hypocritical and damaging to your company’s image to continue to support ALEC.

Contributing yearly to an organization that works to undermine climate science and environmental regulation doesn’t exactly scream sustainability. Please be honest with consumers and make a real commitment to the environment by cutting ties with ALEC.

Sincerely,
