Shut Down Illegal, Inhumane “Swim with Dolphins” Facility

Target: Alfred Gray, Minister of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Local Government of the Bahamas

Goal: Close down dolphin facility due to awful living conditions for the dolphins.

Dolphins are being forced to live in cramped, unhealthy conditions at a “swim with the dolphins” facility in the Bahamas. At the Blackbeards Cay facility in Nassau, New Providence, the dolphins’ pens are only 7 feet deep at mid tide and offer the animals no shade from the scorching sun. There is also no protection from natural disasters, despite the Bahamas being prone to severe storms and hurricanes.

Because of these conditions being unfit to house the marine animals, the Supreme Court has ruled that the facility be shut down and the dolphins relocated to a safer location. Unfortunately, the government has not enforced the judge’s order. Furthermore, the construction of another dolphin facility has already been approved.

Keeping marine animals captive for human enjoyment is a cruel and outdated practice. Considering that numerous scientific studies place dolphins’ intelligence levels very close to our own, it is even more disgraceful to keep these clever animals captive in tiny pens. It is time to put an end to the enslavement and exploitation of dolphins and other marine animals for the sake of our entertainment, starting with this illegally-run facility.

Please sign this petition urging the Bahamas government to enforce this particular ruling to shut down this facility and prevent another from being built.

Dear Minister Gray,

A “swim with the dolphins” facility is running illegally in Nassau, New Providence. At Blackbeards Cay, dolphins are forced to live in pens only 7 feet deep at mid tide with no shade or protection from natural disasters. In light of these deplorable conditions, the Supreme Court has ruled that the facility be shut down and the dolphins be moved to a safer and more humane location.

However, the Bahamas government has failed to enforce this ruling and this facility continues to run illegally. Moreover, plans to build another dolphin facility have been approved. Numerous scientific studies have revealed that dolphins’ intelligence levels are closer to our own than we previously believed. Considering this fact, it is incredibly inhumane to keep these smart animals captive, forcing them to perform and be handled by visitors.

Dolphins and other marine animals have no place being confined to tiny pens for human enjoyment. It is time to put an end to these facilities, starting with Blackbeards Cay. I urge you to ensure that the Supreme Court’s ruling be enforced and that this facility be shut down for good, and that no future facilities housing captive marine animals be built.
