Target: David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party
Goal: Dismiss Prisons Minister who sent a transgender woman to an all-male prison where she killed herself.
A transgender woman was found dead in an all-male prison recently, after telling her friends that she would kill herself if she were sent there. Vicky Thompson — who identified herself as a female since her mid teens — had allegedly asked to be sent to a woman’s prison before her request was denied.
According to an article in the Independent, Thompson’s solicitor, Mohammed Hussein, had told the prison service that it was “absolutely essential” that she was sent to a woman’s prison. “[…] it would be inhumane to place her in a male prison,” he said.
Andrew Selous, the Prisons Minister overlooking the prison service that sent Thompson to an all-male prison, shows a pattern of discrimination and disrespect towards the LGBT community and its individuals. He was strongly opposed to the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in 2013, stating that “[Gay marriage] is directly contrary to what Jesus said.” Even a few weeks ago, he wrongly sent another transgender woman, Tara Hudson, to an all-male prison. Luckily, she was moved after 150,000+ people signed a petition to relocate her.
As an individual who so strongly opposes the rights of gay, lesbian, and transgender people, Selous should be dismissed from his job as the Prisons Minister.
Dear Prime Minister Cameron,
Many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals face discrimination both inside and outside of prison every day, by everyday people. So it is disappointing to see that even the government can show that same discrimination towards the LGBT community. It is the government’s job to protect its people and to stop anyone that harms the rights of others.
That being said, Andrew Selous, should be dismissed from his position as the Prisons Minister. He is known to be a strong conservative and Christian, and that is respectable; his religious beliefs, however, are putting LGBT individuals’ rights and lives at risk.
Selous shows a pattern of disrespect towards LGBT individuals. A few weeks ago, he sent a transgender woman, Tara Hudson, to an all-male prison when she herself clearly identified as a woman. Luckily, she was relocated.
Vicky Thompson, another transgender woman who was sent to an all-male prison by the prison service, wasn’t as lucky; she killed herself in prison after her request to be sent to a women’s prison was denied.
We hope that transgender individuals and the LGBT community are shown respect by dismissing Selous from his position as the Prisons Minister. Someone who is so opposed to the rights of the LGBT people should have no right to be put in a place of authority over them.
