Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Fight President Obama’s nominee for head of the FDA, Robert M. Califf, because he is financially obligated to drug companies.
President Obama recently nominated Robert M. Califf to be appointed as head of the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) causing a justified outrage among Senate members. Califf is currently a clinical trial expert and cardiologist at Duke University. During his time working at Duke University, Cardiff was a consultant for multiple major drug companies and received significant funds from these companies to conduct his experiments. This has led to much concern about his dedication to running an honest and effective FDA as opposed to a corrupt and biased one.
The FDA holds an enormous amount of power, controlling the restrictions and rules on the foods we eat to the medicine we take. Corruption within the FDA could lead to drug companies withholding information about drugs they are releasing or not performing proper tests on their drugs. This would make potentially harmful and deadly medication available to the American people.
The drug industry has proven in the past that its goal is not to provide health and safety, but to make a profit. They have released drugs at high costs without proper testing simply so they can make money, paying no attention to the harm they are causing. Sign this petition and ask President Obama to revoke his nomination for Califf to ensure that the leader of such a powerful administration is an honest one who is dedicated to keeping the American people safe rather than keeping the drug companies rich.
Dear President Obama,
I am writing you to today because I am concerned about the future of the Federal Drug Administration. In the past, the drug industry has sought out loopholes in rules and regulations to pass tests required to put their drugs on the market. Their greed has no concern for the actual well being of the American people but extreme concern for the profit they are making. You recently announced your nomination for the new head of the Federal Drug Administration, Robert M. Califf, and I want you to revoke that nomination.
Dr. Califf has previously worked directly with major drug companies and has received significant funds for these projects from the billionaire companies themselves. The leader of such a powerful administration should have no influence towards his work other than his genuine desire to protect the American people. With billions on the line and personal ties to these mega-powerful drug companies, Califf is not suited to lead the FDA.
Thomas Marciak, a former drug reviewer for the FDA, spoke out about Dr. Califf himself, stating that “the clinical trial system run by drug companies in this world is really broken. I think Rob Califf is one of the architects of that.” I urge you to revoke your nomination for Dr. Califf to ensure that the FDA does not become more corrupt.
