Target: Robert Gates, President of the Boy Scouts of America
Goal: Create open acceptance for transgender boys in the Boy Scouts of America.
The Boy Scouts of America are still discriminating against transgender boys even though they have taken steps in support of gay rights. Urge the president of the Boy Scouts of America to create open acceptance for transgender boys.
Currently, transgender boys are not allowed to be members of the Boy Scouts. Individual troops have the power to modify their membership policy, but this has yet to happen. This means that the troop can deny a transgender boy acceptance solely based on his gender identity.
Much of this discrimination comes from the group’s conservative roots. Religious backers threaten to abandon the organization should it openly support LGBT rights. For an organization that is already struggling financially, this is an understandable problem. However, money does not trump human rights. The Boy Scouts of America have come a long way in their acceptance of homosexuality. Openly gay boys and men are now allowed to join the Boy Scouts. While this progress is commendable, transgender boys deserve the same acceptance.
The transgender community has faced never-ending hurdles in its fight for equal rights. Recently, the emergence of Caitlyn Jenner has helped the transgender community gain more attention and support than ever before. Still, the Boy Scouts drag their feet. Join the fight for transgender rights and urge the president of the Boy Scouts of America to allow transgender boys into the Boy Scouts.
Dear Mr. Gates,
We are writing today on behalf of the transgender community. Recently, the Boy Scouts of America have opened their doors to openly gay children and adults. While we appreciate this significant step towards acceptance, we cannot ignore the plight of transgender boys.
Currently, transgender boys are not allowed in the Boy Scouts. Individual troops are able to modify this policy on an individual basis, but few actually do. This means that a transgender boy can be turned away from the Boy Scouts because of his gender identity. This is not acceptable.
While we recognize and commend the steps that you have taken towards supporting LGBT rights, it is not okay to discriminate based on sexual orientation or identity. We urge you to take steps towards accepting openly transgender boys into the Boy Scouts and supporting equal rights for all.
