Target: Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican Majority Leader
Goal: Demand that climate change be addressed as a national security issue with long-term planning.
Lasting effects of the shifting climate could have dangerous consequences for national security. The US needs to formulate a long-term action plan for dealing with this global problem instead of treating it as a fictionalized or exaggerated issue.
Climate change will have drastic effects on military capacity and security, both domestically and globally. According to the Center for Naval Analyses, the increasing amount of environmental problems could result in severe weather changes such as storms, droughts, floods and hurricanes. Human-caused environmental problems can also create dangerous changes in the ecosystem. Famine, which can result in conflict and violence, is also a possible consequence.
Scientists predict that climate change will soon produce uncontrollable and irreversible effects on the world. The existence of climate change has been proven by the scientific community definitively and should no longer be a topic for debate. Instead it should be time to incorporate long-term resolutions into national and international planning.
Demand that climate change be a central focus in long-term planning in the US and across the world.
Dear Mr. McConnell,
Climate change has been proven to be a potential threat to national security. The US needs to push for long-term action against the issue.
Global warming is not only an environmental concern, but will also result in military and security issues throughout the world. The changes in our environment could also result in food shortages and violence, especially in countries that are already poverty-stricken.
The United States must take a leadership role in dealing with the environmental crisis. As a powerful and influential nation, it’s imperative that we begin pushing for change throughout the global community in terms of climate control. The environment is already past the point where it can be fixed by one nation or with short-term actions. We must execute severe long-term plans that require all nations to come together towards fixing this crisis.
We urge you to begin serious long-term planning to prevent climate change from becoming a long-term security threat.
